Auckland FC 2 – 2 Central Coast Mariners

Match Report brought to you by Cupra (Official motor vehicle partner of Auckland FC)

Not the birthday present we wanted.

Draws are becoming a bit of a theme for AFC of late and this week’s match between Auckland FC and the Central Coast Mariners played out like the experience of wanting your dream car but winding up with something less satisfying.

Hopes ran high for Auckland FC as Guillermo May swiftly put them in the lead with a 10th-minute header, creating early excitement reminiscent of spotting the perfect car on a lot. Yet, much like finding your new car’s flaws upon closer inspection, Auckland’s performance gradually took on a careless tone, marked by sloppy passing and an inability to capitalise further.

Auckland FC 0 – 4 Western United

The Mariners, akin to an unexpected competitor in the bidding process, remained steady, biding their time before striking back. A crucial equalizer by Vitor Feijão in the 71st minute, after Auckland’s defensive lapse, mirrored the moment another buyer swoops in on the car you were after. Though Callan Elliot briefly reignited Auckland’s hopes with a powerful strike in the 78th minute, the joy was fleeting. The dramatic final blow came in the 90th minute (aren’t late goals our thing?) when Nicholas Duarte headed home amidst chaos, much like abruptly losing your chance after believing the deal was yours.

Ultimately, Auckland FC’s third consecutive draw, despite initial promise, left fans with frustration and the players with questions about their consistency—much like settling for a car that wasn’t your first choice, but now it’s too late to change.

The good news is that Auckland FC remain top of the tree – but we need to get back to winning ways and this home game should have been the start! See you in Brisbane in a couple of weeks.
