The Giltrap Group, a cornerstone of New Zealand’s automotive industry, is embarking on a transformative journey with new leadership, a steadfast commitment to legacy, and bold ambitions to tackle evolving market challenges. We were invited to an intimate get-together at the Park Hyatt to find out more.
Steve Kenchington, who has been with the group for, well forever, is stepping into a pivotal leadership role as the organisation undergoes significant changes after decades of management by the Giltrap family. Despite these changes, the group’s foundational values, established by Sir Colin Giltrap in 1966, remain deeply embedded in its DNA. Meanwhile, the Giltrap Group’s long-standing focus on nurturing talent from within continues, with Ben Montgomery, a seasoned industry professional, taking on responsibility for iconic brands Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR).

Over nibbles (we would have gone anyway), Kenchington reflected on the rapid evolution of the automotive industry, notably the competitive pressure brought by the rise of Chinese car brands, which he welcomed as a challenge to spur innovation. He emphasised that the group’s success lies in being adaptable, differentiating itself from competitors, and staying true to its core values of “family values, corporate standards”.
“The group has grown significantly from its earlier days, now dealing with nearly 100 vehicle brands in one of New Zealand’s largest independent distribution and retail networks, employing over 1,000 people,” he said proudly (and rightfully so). Going on to say that regardless of the size it’s grown to, they have a health and wellness focus that is simply world class.
Fostering new leadership has been a consistent priority within the group. Kenchington highlighted Colin Giltrap’s tradition of promoting from within: “Colin’s always been one for nurturing talent,” he shared. Ben Montgomery, who cut his teeth across various roles within Volvo, Renault, Volkswagen, and other ventures, embodies this ethos. Montgomery has demonstrated his versatility and leadership in challenging times, particularly with Volvo’s transition to electric vehicles. His ascension marks a continuation of the Giltrap Group’s legacy while infusing the organization with fresh energy and vision.
Jaguar and Land Rover: Adapting for the Future
As JLR transitions under this new leadership, Kenchington acknowledged the significant pressures facing Jaguar. Transformation is essential to ensure its survival in an increasingly competitive environment, and the brand is repositioning itself as a super-luxury automaker. A controversial new marketing campaign, bold in its design and execution, has drawn interest globally and initiated conversations about the brand’s future. For Land Rover, enduring success with models like the Range Rover Sport and the Defender has demonstrated its ability to maintain enthusiasm and demand in a rapidly evolving marketplace. Notably, the Defender remains a strong performer four years into its latest iteration, with a facelift slated to reinvigorate interest later in the year.
A Heartfelt Connection to Community
Beyond sales figures and market strategy, Kenchington highlighted the human side of the business, which has been a personal highlight during his tenure. Recalling impactful community initiatives, such as raising $1 million for mental health charity Mitey (with Sir John Kirwan)during the pandemic, he celebrated the generosity and spirit of customers. He also shared stories of compelling brand initiatives, including the global success of Land Rover’s restoration of a classic Defender for its owners, a gift that perfectly encapsulated the brand’s bond with its customers.
Preserving Kiwi Motorsport Legacy
A rich motorsport history also remains central to the group’s identity, with its ongoing support for Kiwi drivers making an impact on global racing stages. The late Sir Colin Giltrap was renowned for his passion for the sport, and this tradition lives on. The organisation continues to sponsor and foster motorsport talent, ensuring the connection between automotive innovation and New Zealand’s performance-driving heritage stays strong.
Looking Forward
As Kenchington formally takes the reins, he looks ahead with determination and optimism: “We’re starting to see some green shoots appear, which is really exciting for the group.” For employees and customers alike, the Giltrap Group’s blend of family-driven values and corporate standards remains the driving force behind its success. With visionary leadership, bold strategies, and a commitment to community, the group is well-positioned to thrive in an era of industry disruption and opportunity.
