All-new Nissan Z NISMO review – so ‘kin good

The Nissan Z Nismo is a bold evolution of the freshly revised, yet iconic Z platform, delivering a motorsport-inspired experience (NISsan-MOtorsport) that marries refined styling with genuine performance upgrades. True to the Nismo badge, this isn’t simply a cosmetic overhaul; it’s an extensive upgrade to both the look and driving dynamics of a car that’s already impressed me.

Firstly, there’s its looks. The Nismo Z manages to stand out with a stealthy yet attention-grabbing aesthetic. The “stealth gray” paint pops thanks to red accents stretching across the front lip, sills, rear and subtle Nismo badging (the red ‘O’ an homage to the Japanese flag). The redesigned honeycomb grille contributes to a wider, more aggressive stance, while aerodynamic cues like the new three-piece rear spoiler enhance both airflow and visual appeal. The exterior also features lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels paired with Dunlop GT600 tires (255/40 on the front and 285/35 on the rear), providing a grounded and aggressive profile.

But it doesn’t stop there. This Nismo version takes things beyond the surface, delivering tangible performance enhancements. Under the hood, the twin-turbocharged V6 receives a subtle but meaningful boost of around 15 horses and 45 more torque – now producing 309 kW and 520 Nm. The increased power is backed by an upgraded suspension system, sharper steering, and faster shift times from the automatic transmission. The brakes, featuring larger rotors with four-piston calipers in the front and two-piston calipers in the rear, offer more confident stopping power too, perfectly complementing the car’s track-ready demeanor.

Inside, the Nismo Z emphasises a blend of motorsport-ready touches and driver-focused design. Highlights include incredible bucket seats, upholstered with a mix of Alcantara and leather, offering exceptional support on spirited drives, although taller drivers may feel slightly cramped when wearing a helmet when venturing onto the track. The steering wheel is thin and ergonomic, and the cabin features tactile analog ‘pods’ reminiscent of classic Z models. Unfortunately?, the Nismo Z is only available as an automatic, but Nissan has fine-tuned the transmission (and added Sports+) to deliver quick, purposeful shifts, enhancing performance even during daily drives. Track-focused features are added via an updated instrument display that shows vital data like engine oil temp and transmission temp, solidifying its dual street/track identity.

Hmm burger or sushi for lunch?

Alas, I didn’t get to venture onto a racetrack, but the Nissan Z Nismo truly comes alive on the road. It rewards enthusiastic driving with its wider track, improved grip, and stiffer suspension resulting in planted, confidence-inspiring handling. The automatic transmission plays into the hands of performance by offering abrupt, aggressive shifts that remind you this is no commuter car, it’s a sports car first and foremost. Launch control provides a dramatic but effective way to rocket off the line, and the turbochargers’ immense torque ensures effortless pulls through the gears, paired with a soundtrack that, while not a V8 growl, is deeply satisfying.

The chassis dynamics, supported by revised sway bars and harder tires, brilliantly balance precision and fun, though the ride is predictably harsh on uneven roads (you will spill your latte). Steering feedback improves as speed increases, signaling a car that thrives when pushed. The Nismo Z isn’t for casual cruisers, its raw edge and track-focused tuning are aimed squarely at diehard enthusiasts – for which I’m certain there are many.

The Nissan Z Nismo embraces its motorsport roots with a comprehensive package that elevates the standard Z into a focused and thrilling machine. It might lack some of the refinement or high-tech gadgets of modern rivals, but that’s part of its old-school charm. You’ll forgive its stiffness and cabin noise for the sheer fun and exhilaration it delivers. This is a car for purists, a sports car that unapologetically prioritises performance, leaving you with a grin on every drive.
