Active noise cancellation, or ANC, works by generating sound waves that cancel out incoming noise, creating that bubble of silence. Through testing, researchers identified a narrow frequency band, roughly between 750 and 780Hz, that slips through the protection of ANC.

Layered on top of that is a deliberately irregular striking mechanism, producing rapid, uneven hits that are harder for ANC systems to predict and suppress. It’s a genius analogue workaround to a digital problem.

In real-world testing on London streets, cyclists using the DuoBell were detected significantly earlier by pedestrians wearing noise-cancelling headphones. The difference wasn’t marginal: people reacted up to five seconds sooner, or roughly 20 meters earlier, compared to a standard bell. That extra buffer might be the difference between a near-miss and a bad start to the day of all parties involved.

It might not be the case here in hilly, wet Auckland, but cycling is booming in cities worldwide, and with it, the number of interactions between bikes and pedestrians. Data out of London alone shows a noticeable rise in cyclist–pedestrian incidents in recent years, with headphone use (aka obliviousness) increasingly cited as a contributing factor.

What makes this even more interesting is that Škoda isn’t positioning the DuoBell as a commercial product (at least not yet). Instead, they are using the research angle, releasing findings publicly to encourage adoption of the idea.

This project feels like a nod to that legacy.
