The All-New Renault 4 E-Tech Electric Blends Heritage with Modern Versatility

Renault is set to redefine everyday electric mobility with the introduction of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric, a contemporary tribute to one of automotive history’s most iconic and beloved vehicles. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Renault 4, which stands as the fourth best-selling vehicle of all time, the new 4 E-Tech electric is not just about nostalgia; it’s about pioneering mainstream electric vehicle adoption across Europe, particularly for young families and those seeking a truly versatile companion.

Spacious, Modular, and Ready for Anything

A key focus for the Renault 4 E-Tech electric is its exceptional interior space and adaptability. Renault states the vehicle will set new class standards, boasting a generous 420 cubic litres of boot capacity. Practicality is further enhanced by a low load sill for easy access, cleverly designed storage compartments, and a folding rear bench seat. In a first for a Renault electric vehicle, it will also feature a flat-folding front passenger seat, maximising its cargo-carrying potential.

Beyond urban commutes, the 4 E-Tech electric is engineered for a broader range of adventures. It features increased ground clearance and an advanced Extended Grip traction control system, making it capable of tackling muddy or uneven roads with confidence. For added convenience in daily driving, a One Pedal function allows for maximised regenerative braking, potentially bringing the vehicle to a complete stop without using the brake pedal in many situations. It’s also rated to tow a trailer or small caravan up to 750 kg.

Built on a Dedicated EV Platform

Underpinning the new 4 E-Tech electric is Renault’s dedicated AmpR Small platform, which it shares with the recently unveiled Renault 5 E-Tech electric. This platform is unique in Europe and has been engineered to deliver an agile and dynamic driving experience, thanks to a low centre of gravity and a multi-link rear suspension setup. While emphasizing a responsive drive, Renault has also slightly increased comfort levels to align with the vehicle’s all-around versatility.

The platform also supports a suite of modern driving aids, including Active Driver Assist, providing Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities for enhanced safety and convenience on longer journeys.

Smart Charging and Energy Integration

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric comes equipped with an 11 kW AC charger for everyday home or public charging. For longer trips requiring faster top-ups, it supports DC fast charging at 80 kW or 100 kW. A standout feature is the bidirectional capability of its 11 kW AC charger, enabling Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to power external devices, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration. This allows the 4 E-Tech electric to not only draw power from the grid but also to potentially feed carbon-free electricity back into it, becoming an active player in the energy ecosystem through Mobilize services.

Renault’s Vision for a Mainstream EV

According to company statements, “With Renault 4 E-Tech electric, Renault is pursuing its efforts to bring electric vehicles into the mainstream in Europe. This latest model rounds out a range that is already varied… but we were missing a compact car with real space. Now we have it with this versatile, functional, modular model with its large, easy-to-load boot. A car able to satisfy a wide range of everyday needs. It’s a mainstream electric car in tune with its times, packed with useful technologies for driving and comfort.”

Renault also highlighted production efficiencies, noting that investments made in 2021 at the Maubeuge plant for the Renault Kangoo helped limit the development costs for the 4 E-Tech electric’s production line. Specific resources were added for unique features, such as an available canvas sunroof.

A Modern Icon Reimagined

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric appears poised to be more than just an EV; it’s a reimagining of a cultural icon for the electric age. By combining its historic charm with modern practicality, advanced electric technology, and a focus on versatility, Renault aims to deliver a vehicle that truly meets the diverse needs of contemporary drivers and families, pushing forward the accessibility of electric mobility.
