Subaru has introduced the highly anticipated BRZ Tsubasa to New Zealand, marking a significant moment for performance car enthusiasts in the country. Limited to only 10 units, the BRZ Tsubasa derives its name from the Japanese word for ‘wings’, symbolising freedom, speed, and agility. This special edition is not merely a visual statement; it represents the pinnacle of BRZ engineering and performance to date.
Each BRZ Tsubasa comes with exclusive touches, including a uniquely numbered presentation key box (from 1 to 10) and a specially engraved key ring, drawing inspiration from previous limited edition WRX models like the Tatsu and Todoroki. The ‘Tsubasa’ name cleverly nods to the highest-specification BRZ tS, incorporating its initial letters for added significance.
Performance enhancements are at the core of the Tsubasa model. The car boasts STI-tuned front and rear suspension dampers, optimizing its lightweight build, ultra-low centre of gravity, and delivering precision handling. High-performance Brembo brakes with gold-painted 4-piston front and 2-piston rear callipers, paired with larger pads and rotors, significantly increase stopping power and pedal feel. The Tsubasa runs on bespoke 18-inch dark grey metallic alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot 4 tyres for exceptional grip. Exclusively available in Subaru’s signature WR Blue, the vehicle is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission, underscoring its driver-focused nature.
Remarkably, all 10 units were pre-sold before their arrival in New Zealand, testament to the BRZ’s reputation and the appeal of the Tsubasa edition. However, Subaru of New Zealand has indicated plans to secure another special edition BRZ for later in the year, offering hope for those who missed out on this release. As stated by Inchcape General Manager Kym Mellow, the BRZ’s standing as a driver’s car is well-deserved and anticipation is already mounting for their next limited edition model.
