When it comes to automotive aesthetics, “murdered-out” is a well-trodden path. A bit of black trim here, some dark wheels there, and you’re good to go. But Land Rover’s special ops division has looked at the trend, scoffed, and decided to take it to its absolute, light-devouring extreme. Enter the new Range Rover Sport SV Black, a vehicle that doesn’t just have a black pack; it appears to have been ceremoniously ‘dipped in black’ paint, with no surface spared.
This isn’t just an option box you tick; it’s a full-blown identity crisis in the best possible way. JLR is calling it a “bold and defiant interpretation of stealth-like, sporting luxury,” and for once, the marketing fluff rings true. From the outside, every single detail has been given a Narvik Black Gloss finish to accentuate the SUV’s already muscular stance. We’re talking a black-painted carbon fibre bonnet, Gloss Black 23-inch forged alloys, and even Gloss Black brake calipers peeking through them. The quad exhausts? Gloss Black, of course.
In a move that will delight detail fanatics, even the branding has joined the dark side. For the first time, the iconic Range Rover lettering and the SV roundel on the tailgate are finished in black ceramic, leaving absolutely no chrome to ruin the mood. As Range Rover’s Global Managing Director, Martin Limpert, puts it, this is “a statement of audacious rebellion” that goes beyond anything they’ve offered before.
The theme continues inside, creating a dark, purposeful cockpit that matches the commanding exterior. Swing open the door and you’re greeted by new SV Black illuminated treadplates. Settle into the sculpted performance seats, trimmed in tactile Ebony Windsor leather, and you’re surrounded by Gloss Grand Black finishers. It’s the perfect blend of menacing attitude and technical luxury.
Of course, a stealth bomber needs the firepower to back up the looks. The Sport SV Black is exclusively powered by a thumping 635PS, 750Nm 4.4-litre Twin-Turbo MHEV V8 petrol engine. That’s enough grunt to launch this slab of British luxury from 0-100km/h in a supercar-scaring 3.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 290km/h. Keeping it all under control is the most advanced suspension in its class, the 6D Dynamics Suspension system, and for a touch of sci-fi wellness, it even features ‘Body and Soul Seats’ – a sensory audio system designed to enhance your drive.
For those who find the 290km/h top speed a tad excessive for the school run, Range Rover is also introducing a new globally-available version of the Sport SV with the same powertrain and tech, but with its top speed limited to a more ‘sensible’ 265km/h.
The Range Rover Sport SV Black will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from 10-13 July 2025, with order books opening for discerning (and well-funded) clients later in the year. Prepare to see the void staring back at you from a dealership very soon.
