Kia Unveils Groundbreaking Accessory Made from Great Pacific Garbage Patch Plastic
Kia Corporation proudly announces a revolutionary step in sustainable mobility by introducing the world’s first car accessory crafted from plastic sourced from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). This significant achievement comes through Kia’s ongoing partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to addressing the global plastic pollution crisis.
Since 2022, Kia has actively supported The Ocean Cleanup in its mission to develop innovative technologies aimed at cleaning the planet’s oceans. The launch of this exclusive trunk liner for the all-new Kia EV3, made with 40% recycled ocean plastic, marks a pivotal point in Kia’s commitment to sustainability and is a defining moment in their long-term collaboration.
“As the first genuine Kia accessory made using reclaimed ocean plastic, we are proud to see tangible progress made toward creating a circular resource system for ocean plastic,” stated Charles Ryu, Executive Vice President and Head of the Global Brand & CX Division at Kia. “We will leverage the lessons learned during the recycling and product development process to create practical, eco-friendly items for our customers.”

A Design Inspired by the Ocean
The trunk liner features an eye-catching ‘geometric wave’ pattern, designed to echo both the movement of water and the process through which The Ocean Cleanup transforms marine debris into useful products. Resilience and functionality are at the core of the accessory’s design, ensuring that it performs just as well as its conventional counterparts.
With the addition of a QR code embedded in each liner, customers can easily access information about the product’s development and the partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, along with the symbol of the non-profit.
A Commitment to Transforming Trash into Treasure
The collaboration between Kia and The Ocean Cleanup has been driven by a shared belief that discarded plastics can be reimagined into valuable resources. “We are so grateful to have a visionary partner in Kia, who shares our vision of ensuring that the plastic we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is given new life,” remarked Boyan Slat, Founder & CEO of The Ocean Cleanup. “Our mission is possible thanks to like-minded partners such as Kia, and we anticipate this launch will pave the way for many innovative applications of ocean plastic in the future.”

Sustainability at the Forefront
Kia’s drive for sustainability extends beyond this accessory. The company has been proactive in integrating recycled materials across its latest electric vehicle lineup. Notably, the all-electric EV9 SUV incorporates recycled fishnets in its flooring and repurposed plastic bottles for seat fabrics. Likewise, the EV6 also showcases innovative use of recycled plastics in its construction.
With ambitious sustainability goals in place, Kia aims to enhance its use of recycled materials in future vehicles, committing to raise the application of recycled plastics to over 20% by 2030. This dedication underscores Kia’s vision of contributing to a circular resource system and advancing sustainable mobility solutions for a greener future.
The limited-edition trunk liner for the Kia EV3 will be available for order in select markets coinciding with the model’s launch, signifying a bold step forward in the fight against ocean plastic pollution. Kia is not just leading in the automotive industry but is also setting a global example of how innovation and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
