It’s Not You, It’s Your Fuel – Polestar Wants You to Break Up With Petrol

Let’s be honest, we love our cars. They’re more than just metal boxes; they’re freedom, they’re passion, they’re part of the family. But what if that long-term relationship has turned… toxic? That’s the provocative question electric car maker Polestar is asking, and they’re not pulling any punches.

If you were walking through New York City this week (as if), you might have seen a poster asking if you’re a “Dinosaur juice addict”. This isn’t a new public health scare; it’s a bold and disruptive campaign from Polestar, launched during Climate Week NYC to make us all rethink our dependency on gasoline. The Swedish EV brand has framed our connection with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as a “toxic relationship” that it’s high time we ended.

An Intervention on the Streets of New York

In a city where over half a million cars flood into central Manhattan daily, getting a message to stick is tough. Polestar’s solution was to go for the emotional jugular. The campaign plasters the city with jarring questions and even features a special hotline for those who suspect they’re in a toxic relationship with gasoline. Instead of a therapist, callers are met with pre-recorded messages detailing hard facts about fossil fuels and pointing toward a healthier alternative: going electric.

The goal is to cut through the noise and highlight the negative consequences of our petrol habit, from poor air quality to constant noise pollution. Polestar is banking on the language of unhealthy relationships to resonate with consumers and expose the downsides of sticking with outdated tech.

Doubling Down While Others Backtrack

The timing of this campaign is critical. According to Fredrika Klarén, Polestar’s Head of Sustainability, it’s a direct response to a worrying trend. “As many traditional car companies are back-tracking on their climate promises, we are doing the opposite,” Klarén stated, emphasizing Polestar’s unwavering commitment to a zero-emissions future.

This isn’t just marketing fluff; the numbers paint a stark picture. Global road transport is responsible for over 15% of all energy-related emissions, and private cars and vans guzzle more than a quarter of all oil used across the globe. While EV momentum is growing, the transition is still too slow for what the climate requires.

A July 2025 study from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) underlines the benefits of making the switch. It found that a battery electric car produces roughly 73% less carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions over its lifetime compared to a similar gasoline car. That figure, it should be noted, assumes the EV is charged with the projected average European electricity mix over the next couple of decades.

More Than Just a Campaign

Polestar is keen to prove its commitment extends beyond clever posters. The company is actively working on its “Polestar 0 project,” an ambitious mission to create a completely climate-neutral car by 2030 without using carbon offsets to cheat the system.

We’re also seeing this philosophy baked into their upcoming models. The Polestar 5, a high-performance grand tourer, is being built with a sharp focus on sustainable materials. Its structure will reportedly use aluminum produced in smelters running on renewable electricity, blended with a high percentage of recycled aluminum.

Through this two-pronged attack of a disruptive public campaign and tangible manufacturing goals, Polestar is sending an unambiguous signal. As Klarén puts it, the company plans to “challenge industry, policymakers and consumers to move beyond outdated technologies and accelerate the shift to clean mobility”.
