Kiwis with a penchant for cutting-edge EVs are likely buzzing with anticipation. Aion, the electric arm of Chinese auto giant GAC, is making waves with its global expansion plans, but will those waves reach our shores? The short answer is: maybe.

Aion’s shiny new Global Version Aion V is making a splash, boasting a whopping 750km range and a rapid 400V+3C fast-charging system – enough to get you from Auckland to Taupo and back, with a quick coffee stop to admire the scenery (and recharge your batteries, both human and automotive). This futuristic chariot also packs some serious tech, including the ADiGO PILOT intelligent driving system powered by AI large models. Imagine letting the car do the thinking in Auckland traffic – bliss!

Aion V New Zealand

So, where does New Zealand fit into Aion’s grand global scheme? Well, Aion is definitely spreading its wings, with recent forays into markets like the Philippines, Kuwait, Nigeria, and a planned entry into Mexico. And, importantly for us down under, Aion is set to land in Australia in this year. This is a big deal, as it will be the first state-owned Chinese EV brand to grace Aussie roads. Now, we Kiwis often follow Aussie trends (especially when it comes to utes and SUVs), so this could bode well for a New Zealand launch.

However, before you rush out to trade in your trusty Corolla, there’s a catch. Aion hasn’t officially uttered a peep about New Zealand. No press releases, no whispered promises, no cryptic tweets – nothing. While the Australian launch makes a Kiwi arrival seem plausible, we’re still in the realm of speculation. Will Aion see the potential in our EV-hungry market? Will they be swayed by our stunning landscapes (perfect for showcasing their sleek designs)? Only time will tell.
