Spanning an impressive 13,000 square metres over two floors, this facility is far more than just office space. It’s a high-tech sandbox designed to seamlessly merge the virtual and physical worlds of car development. Inside, a new prototype workshop for future models sits alongside advanced materials development labs and a crucial software integration department. In an era where a car’s soul is as much about its code as its camshaft, this new hub is dedicated to testing and perfecting all software, electrical, and high-voltage digital systems that will power the next generation of grand tourers. The centre was officially opened by Bentley’s top brass, Chairman and CEO, Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, and R&D Board Member, Dr. Matthias Rabe, signaling its critical importance.
This expansion is a key part of Bentley’s bold “Beyond100+” strategy, which maps out a fundamental transformation for the brand. The goal is breathtakingly clear: to introduce a new hybrid or electric model every single year until the company becomes exclusively electric by 2035. This new Engineering Technical Centre is the engine room for that transition. As Dr. Matthias Rabe commented, it is a “key building block for the successful delivery of this strategy and helps enable engineering concepts to become reality”. The creation of the new centre also involved a significant reshuffle at the historic Pyms Lane factory. To make way for the future, departments have been moved out of the A1 building, the oldest structure on the Crewe site. But this historic building isn’t being retired; it’s being reborn. It is currently being transformed to handle Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) assembly, with the first fully electric Bentleys slated to begin production there in 2027. This symbolic act of transforming the oldest part of the factory into the newest production hub speaks volumes about Bentley’s commitment.
This investment is part of a much larger, campus-wide evolution. The new Engineering Technical Centre joins the recently opened Design Studio and the ongoing construction of a new Paint Shop and Integrated Logistics Centre, both due to open next year.
