Hyundai and General Motors have officially announced their plans for a range of five co-developed vehicles, the first of which will debut in 2028. The “strategic collaboration” will result in a range aimed at the North, Central and South American markets.
Central and South America will receive a compact SUV, car and pick-up as well as a midsize pick-up from this collaboration. The four vehicles will be available in either combustion or hybrid variants. However, GM and Hyundai are also working on a fully electric van for the North American market.
Forecasts from the two brands currently expect these five vehicles to return 880,000 units in sales per year once production is at capacity. GM will take the lead on the mid-size truck project while Hyundai take charge of the compact vehicles and electric van. While the platforms may be shared, the vehicles will still feature uniquely designed exterior and interiors, staying true to each brand’s roots.
As part of the initiative, the two brands are also joining forces on the procurement of materials, transport and logistics with the sharing of raw materials, components and other systems also on the cards. The brands will also be exploring ‘low-carbon emissions steel’ as the two commit to sustainable manufacturing. Who knows what’s to come from these two brands, could we eventually see an LS powered Hyundai or a Corvette with parametric LEDs, only time will tell!
