This week marks a historic milestone for Ford Australia as the automaker celebrates a century since its founding in Geelong, Victoria. Established on March 31, 1925, the Ford Motor Company of Australia Pty Ltd has played a pivotal role in shaping automotive culture and innovation, both locally and globally.

A Humble Beginning with the Model T
Ford’s journey in Australia began when senior executives from North America scouted the country in 1923, identifying Geelong as the ideal location due to its deep seaport, rail access, available land, and skilled workforce. By 1925, the first-ever car to roll out of the Geelong factory was the legendary Model T Ford, known affectionately in Australia as the “Dalgety,” after the Dalgety Wool Store where the vehicles were initially assembled. This car, priced at around £185 (equivalent to $18,542 today), revolutionised transportation by bringing affordability and reliability to the masses.

Geelong’s Lasting Automotive Legacy
Geelong’s ties to Ford remain strong and are deeply woven into the community’s fabric. While the old Dalgety factory has since transformed, Geelong prides itself on being the birthplace of the world’s first coupe-utility vehicle. Engineered in 1934 by Lew Bandt to serve as both a family car and a rugged work vehicle, the “ute” remains a symbol of Australian ingenuity. Additionally, Geelong’s Norlane site, along with the You Yangs Proving Ground, continues Ford’s legacy of innovation, hosting research and development facilities key to the company’s future.

Showcasing a Century of Ingenuity
To commemorate its 100-year milestone, Ford Australia is set to host a special “History in the Making” centenary event in Melbourne on April 4. Attendees will be treated to an automotive journey through Ford’s history with highlights from its Heritage Fleet, including iconic models like the 1960 XK Falcon and the groundbreaking 1934 Coupe-Ute. Modern vehicles, such as the Mustang Mach-E EV and the Ford Ranger PHEV, will also be on display, representing the company’s commitment to a sustainable and innovative future .

On April 6, the celebration extends to the All Ford Day in Geelong, anticipated to be one of the most significant gatherings of Ford enthusiasts and vehicles in history – yes we will be there.

Connecting the Past to the Present
Ford fans can also step back in time through the Ford Heritage Vault, now enriched with over 2,300 digitized brochures and images of Australian Ford models. This repository, part of a global initiative to preserve Ford’s rich legacy, offers an invaluable glimpse into the evolution of the brand, from beloved vehicles of the past, such as the brightly colored XR6 and XR8 of the 2000s, to rare concepts and prototypes.

Ted Ryan, Ford’s Heritage Brand Manager, emphasises the importance of making this history accessible: “We want to ensure the collection is made accessible online for the general public, so everyone can re-live their favorite moments”.

Chapter Two Begins
As Ford Australia celebrates its first hundred years, it stands as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and community. With a deep connection to Geelong and the broader Australian public, the company looks forward to driving into its next century, continuing its legacy as a cornerstone of the automotive world.
