It’s a sombre day for the Kiwi motoring enthusiast community. A day we knew might come, but one we hoped was still far in the distance. Toyota New Zealand has officially announced the end of the road for the current generation A90 GR Supra, confirming that the model will be discontinued locally after a final, special run of six exclusive Track Editions are sold. It marks the closing of a vibrant, six-year chapter that began in 2019 with the triumphant and highly anticipated return of a legend under the banner ‘SUPRA IS BACK’. For many, this isn’t just a model being retired; it’s the dimming of a halo, a hero car that re-ignited a passion for pure performance in the Toyota lineup.
A Legacy Reborn, A Legend Cemented

The Supra nameplate already carried an immense weight of history and a “cult following” long before the current generation arrived. Forged in the crucible of 90s Japanese performance and immortalised on the silver screen and in video games, the MkIV Supra was an icon many of us grew up idolising. When Toyota announced its return, the weight of expectation was monumental. The GR Supra landed in New Zealand in 2019 and immediately began carving its own legacy, delighting a new generation of drivers with its potent turbocharged performance, classic rear-drive dynamics, and a design that turned heads on every corner.
In its six years on our shores, just over one hundred GR Supras have found homes with Kiwi enthusiasts, making each one a rare and cherished sight on our roads. More than just a sales figure, the GR Supra was a statement piece. It was the flagship that helped establish and elevate the entire TOYOTA GAZOO Racing profile in New Zealand, proving Toyota’s renewed commitment to “making ever-better cars through motorsport”. As Toyota New Zealand Chief Strategic Officer Andrew Davis noted, “the GR added new enthusiasts to what has been an amazing Sports car”.

The Driving Spirit
At its core, the GR Supra’s appeal was the drive. The heart of the beast, a smooth and powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, delivered a thrilling 285kW and 500Nm of torque exclusively to the rear wheels. It was a recipe for pure, unadulterated fun. Initially launched with an automatic transmission, Toyota New Zealand listened to the purists and, in a move celebrated by enthusiasts, added a manual transmission option due to overwhelming customer demand. This decision solidified the GR Supra’s status as a true driver’s car. The car’s exceptional dynamics didn’t just create a fantastic standalone sports car; they acted as a spiritual guide for the brand, helping to “pave the way for other exciting models like the GR Yaris, GR Corolla and GR 86”. It was the hero car that gave credibility and context to the entire GR portfolio.

One Final Roar: The GR Supra Track Edition
For its final act, the GR Supra is not going quietly. Toyota is sending it off with six ultra-desirable, collectible GR Supra Track Editions, representing the “most focused version” of the model ever offered here. These final cars are more than just a badge; they feature significant under-the-skin enhancements, including motorsport-inspired suspension components, added chassis reinforcement, and a retuned limited-slip differential for greater agility and composure. A larger front brake package ensures consistent stopping power under hard use.
Visually, these final six will be unmistakable, set apart by front-wheel arch aero flaps, a stunning carbon fibre ducktail spoiler, and unique 19-inch matte black alloy wheels housing beefy, red-painted brake calipers. Available in both manual and automatic transmission for a Toyota Driveaway Price of $109,990, these six cars represent a final, poignant opportunity to own a piece of New Zealand motoring history.
While the Supra story will continue on the racetrack—with two Supra GT4 EVO entries and a V8 variant entering the Australian Supercars Championship in 2026, featuring Kiwi driver Ryan Wood—it offers little comfort for those who dreamed of seeing one in their own garage. The dream of buying a new GR Supra is over.
This chapter closes, but as Andrew Davis said, “the spirit of Supra will continue to live on at the circuit and in the hearts of our fans”. The GR fire still burns brightly in the fantastic GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR 86, but the road will undoubtedly feel a little emptier without its flagship, its legend, its Supra. Farewell, you will be missed.
