A Luxurious Leap – 2024 Mercedes E-Class review

SUV’s may very well be the thing right now, but thankfully, prestigious car-brand Mercedes-Benz haven’t forgotten the sedan. Meet the all-new Mercedes E-Class E300, a journey of elegance, performance, and cutting-edge technology – the embodiment of innovation and luxury in the realm of executive transportation.

With a rich heritage dating back to the post-war 170V, the E-Class has consistently set the gold standard for business sedans, and the latest iteration continues this legacy with a slew of impressive upgrades that will cater to both the driver and passengers alike.

At first glance, the new E-Class retains that classic Mercedes-Benz style but they have updated it to meet modern demands. For example, front and centre of my review E300 was a three-pointed star grill (first seen in the new C-Class), that maintains an unmissable connection to its roots, however, there is an illuminated flat panel option for those technophiles. Added to this, modern LED headlights, boasting an astonishing 1.1 million pixels, shine brightly, lighting up the night like a runway for your business ambitions.

In terms of dimensions; this new model sports an extended wheelbase that adds nearly an inch of legroom inside, while the aerodynamic design, complete with flush door handles, results in a low drag coefficient of 0.23. And let’s not forget about those striking 20-inch AMG-style wheels that not only enhance the aesthetic but also contribute to a more grounded drive.

As you step inside, you’re enveloped in an oasis of luxury. The cream-coloured leather seats offer not just warmth but a host of amenities such as massage functions, heating, and ventilation that ensure that you’re always in a state of comfort, whether in rush-hour traffic or cruising down the highway, (but could be a worry for those with pesky kids). Subtle wooden accents flow across the interior, reinforcing a sense of sophistication.

As expected, Mercedes has not skimped on technology with the new E. The Burmester 4D audio system, featuring 17 speakers throughout the cabin, transforms the interior into a concert hall, particularly if you find yourself jamming to classic rock while zipping through city roads. And let’s not overlook the Mercedes Hyperscreen, which features three expansive displays that seamlessly integrate every digital need you could have while driving.

What truly sets the E-Class apart from its competitors is its focus on technology and safety. The latest iteration of the MBUX system allows for an intuitive user experience. Among its many features, the car employs facial recognition to customise settings according to the driver, ensuring a personal touch every time you step inside.

The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is a highlight of the E-Class, integrating advanced technology seamlessly into the driving experience. This system features a central touchscreen, a driver display, and an infotainment/entertainment screen for passengers.

The advanced voice recognition technology allows you to control navigation, media, climate settings, and more just by speaking naturally. For instance, saying “Hey Mercedes, I’m cold” will automatically adjust the climate control settings to warm up the cabin.

Smart Connectivity: The system is designed to keep you connected on the go, integrating features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This allows seamless access to your smartphone’s apps, navigation, and music directly on the infotainment screen.

The navigation system is intuitive and offers real-time traffic updates and route optimization. The 3D map view enhances your spatial understanding of your surroundings, and with augmented reality features, directions appear over a live video feed of the road, making it easier to follow your navigation seamlessly.

Safety is paramount in the E-Class, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to passenger protection. Multiple advanced driver-assistance systems monitor the environment around you to prevent accidents before they happen. Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe Plus, the list goes on and on.

The acoustic qualities of the cabin have been elevated in this iteration of the E-Class. The integration of acoustic glass and additional insulation creates an atmosphere that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle outside. Conversations can flow freely without raising your voice, creating a serene environment conducive to both relaxation and productivity.

Moreover, the Energising Comfort feature combines aromatherapy, lighting, seating adjustments, and music to create specific atmospheres that refresh or invigorate you, making every drive more enjoyable.

The luxury continues in spades in the rear too. Passengers are treated to a generous 20 cm of knee room, soft-touch materials, and four-zone climate control that allows everyone to set their perfect environment. The dual panoramic sunroof adds an airy feel, while the individual heated seats ensure that every ride feels like first-class.

Under the bonnet lies a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, capable of delivering 190kW and 400Nm of torque. With the addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, drivers experience an extra boost, making the E300 agile enough to dash from 0-100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. Efficiency is impressive too, with consumption figures around 7.2 L per 100 km and CO2 emissions of just 163g/km.

The steering is incredibly responsive, offering a light touch that’s easy to handle around town but remains dynamic enough for spirited driving. The feedback from the steering wheel is reassuring too, ensuring that drivers feel connected to the road without sacrificing comfort.

Additionally, while my review model didn’t come equipped with rear-wheel steering, it still handled the corners with vigour when pushed. In fact, the driving experience is remarkably engaging, and offers surprising agility for a sedan of this size.

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 is more than just a sedan; it’s a mobile business ecosystem. With an expansion of technology, a focus on passenger comfort, and a pedigree that signifies prestige and power, this car thoroughly impresses on all fronts, offering an experience tailored-made for success.
