BYD is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in the currently-turbulent electric vehicle market. Their latest offering, the BYD Sealion, marks a significant step beyond their traditional electric vehicles, venturing into the world of plug-in hybrids with an impressive blend of technology, design, and practicality.
Continuing with their aquatic theme (Seal, Dolphin), the BYD Sealion is designed for those who seek both functionality and a bit of flair in their family SUV. While many Kiwis may associate BYD primarily with electric vehicles, the Sealion introduces the brand’s first plug-in hybrid variant (or DM-i), showcasing their commitment to adapting and evolving within the market.

Available in two configurations, Dynamic (2WD) and Premium (AWD) models, the Sealion is equipped with an intelligent DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligence) powertrain. This configuration includes an ICE engine (in our Premium case a 1.5-litre turbo), an 18.3 kWh battery, and (again for Premium) twin motors, delivering a robust 238 kW and 550 Nm of torque. It is a vehicle that promises both a playful ride and impressive versatility, catering to urban commuters as well as adventurous families.

At first glance, the Sealion’s exterior may not resemble its namesake. However, it captures attention with a face that is both sleek and confident, underscored by vertical slats and air intakes reminiscent of whiskers. These design features accentuate its substantial width, enhancing the SUV’s road presence.

While on that, with a length of 4.68 metres and a height of 1.67 metres, the Sealion fits comfortably into the family SUV segment, and Mall slots to boot. The overall design is modern and sophisticated, featuring strong character lines and a floating roof aesthetic that gives it a contemporary edge. The 19-inch wheels and eye-catching garnishes add to its appeal, making it a striking presence on the road.

The spacious interior boasts generous cargo capacity, providing 425 litres of boot space, ample for your weekly grocery run or a weekend getaway. The electric tailgate with a hands-free opening feature adds to the convenience, allowing for easy access even when your hands are full.

The Sealion’s DM-i powertrain is one of its most impressive features. By combining a turbocharged engine with an electric motor, BYD has crafted a system that operates primarily in an electric mode, switching to petrol power seamlessly when required. It doesn’t stop there, whereas most PHEV’s take an AC charge only, the Sealion will DC fast charge and with its V2L (Vehicle to Load) ability can power your appliances while out and about too.

This hybrid configuration ensures efficient driving, allowing for an electric-only range of approximately 90 kilometres, complemented by an additional 900 kilometres from the petrol engine. The combined range of nearly 1,000 kilometres virtually eliminates range anxiety, making long journeys hassle-free.

With a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.9 seconds, the Sealion is anything but sluggish. The smart system intelligently manages power delivery, functioning primarily as an electric vehicle for daily commutes while providing the reassurance of petrol power for longer trips. The interior remains hushed, reducing distractions and enhancing the driving experience, whether running errands in the city or exploring the open road.

Fuel efficiency is commendable as well, averaging around 5.9l/100km when in hybrid mode (and battery at 25%), while minimal emissions at approximately 32 g/km further solidify the Sealion’s position as an environmentally conscious option among family SUVs.

Step inside the BYD Sealion, and you’ll be greeted by a cabin that balances practicality and luxury. Several interior features stand out. Plush Seating for one, the seats are notably more comfortable than previous BYD models, offering ample support for both front and rear passengers. Generous Cabin Space, the interior is spacious with an intimate feel, and its panoramic sunroof elevates the ambiance by flooding the cabin with natural light. And it comes with heaps of storage solutions, including wireless charging ports, deep armrest compartments, and large door pockets, all ensuring that your belongings are well accommodated.

The centrepiece of the dashboard is a large, customisable touchscreen that can be used both in landscape and portrait modes. This display allows you to easily access navigation, media, and even a karaoke feature (sighs audibly) a fun nod to those longer waits at charging stations.

Arguably more important than karaoke, the BYD Sealion is equipped with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These features enhance safety and driving convenience without overwhelming the driver. The adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a comprehensive 360-degree camera system add another layer of comfort, making driving easier and more efficient.

One standout feature is the car’s ability to function via smartphone technology. With NFC capabilities, owners can unlock and start the vehicle using their phones, paving the way for a keyless experience that’s perfect for today’s tech-savvy world.

The BYD Sealion represents an impressive step forward for BYD in New Zealand, bridging the gap between conventional and electric driving. With its sophisticated design, clever powertrain, and luxurious interior, it is an enticing option for anyone in the market for a family-friendly SUV.
