BAIT and G-Shock Release Banana-Themed ‘Yamagata’s Finest’ DW5600

Retailer BAIT has teamed up with G-Shock again on a DW5600 styled after a perfectly ripe banana, named in tribute to the Yamagata factory that Casio calls the mother factory of all G-Shocks.

Most watch collaborations rely on colour codes and logo swaps. BAIT’s latest G-Shock project relies on fruit. The retailer has worked with Casio’s toughest watch brand again on “Yamagata’s Finest”, a DW5600 designed to look like a banana at peak ripeness.

BAIT announced the watch on its official X account on 29 September and said it would go on sale online at BAITme.com the next day. The announcement did not include pricing or production numbers.

A Tribute to the Factory Floor

The name is the most interesting part of this release. Yamagata Prefecture in Japan is home to the plant that Casio calls the mother factory of all G-Shocks. Most special editions are named after a city or a subculture. This one names the factory where the watches are made.

The watch underneath is the DW5600, G-Shock’s classic square digital model. Putting a factory tribute on such a well-known model makes sense.

Ripeness as a Timing Joke

The banana theme is not just random novelty. BAIT says the design shows the fruit at its sweetest point, which is a light-hearted reference to timing. It’s a neat pun for a watch, because a banana, like a product launch, depends on getting the timing right.

BAIT also calls the watch a “non-GMO” take on the DW5600, which is clearly another joke. The announcement doesn’t list exact colours or materials. Anyone who wants the full details of the finish should check BAIT’s product listing.

Packaging and a New Mascot

BAIT has put a lot of effort into the packaging. The watch comes in a special can and box, both branded with a makeshift mascot called “Shawty with Freckles”.

According to BAIT, the character represents the overlap between the cultures it shares with Casio. The freckles also suit the theme, since a ripe banana usually has brown speckles. This packaging is part of the product, not just something to throw away.

More Than a Fruit Pun

On paper, this is a small release: a familiar watch, a playful theme and an unusual box. The Yamagata name gives it more substance than the banana joke alone. Instead of another logo on the strap, the special edition credits the factory where every G-Shock starts.
