GWM Hits 250,000 Australian Sales with ORA 5 Electric SUV

GWM has handed over its 250,000th vehicle in Australia, and the choice of car says something about where the brand is headed. The milestone vehicle is a Flamingo Pink ORA 5 SUV, delivered to Louise Johnson, a primary school arts teacher from Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne’s west. It is a deliberately human moment for a brand that has moved quickly from niche importer to one of Australia’s faster-growing automotive names.

A Milestone That Arrived Faster Than the Last

The handover took place at Werribee GWM, with representatives from GWM Australia present alongside the local dealer team. The timing is notable: the milestone follows GWM’s record-breaking June 2026 sales result and lands during what the company describes as its strongest period of growth in the Australian market.

GWM Australia Chief Operating Officer John Kett noted that each successive milestone has arrived more quickly than the one before it, pointing to growing customer confidence, an expanding dealer network, and a broader product range as the drivers behind that acceleration.

The ORA 5 as a Brand Gateway

That the 250,000th vehicle is an ORA 5 is fitting. The electric SUV has introduced a significant number of Australians to the GWM brand, including buyers who had not previously considered the company’s vehicles. Johnson describes herself as one of those converts.

Her Flamingo Pink ORA 5 made an impression immediately. She noted that students spotted it in the car park on the first day and have been talking about it ever since, both the colour and the fact that it runs on electricity. For a brand trying to build recognition, that kind of organic visibility is difficult to manufacture.

The ORA 5 sits within GWM’s broader portfolio, which spans the Haval, TANK, Cannon, and ORA nameplates across petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric variants.

Nine Models Still to Come

GWM is framing this milestone as a waypoint rather than a destination. The company is currently working through a nine-model product offensive in Australia, with several launches still scheduled for the remainder of the year. Among them are the Cannon Hi4-T plug-in hybrid and new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel variants.

The broader ambition is to reach a top-five position among Australian automotive brands by 2027. That is a significant target in a competitive market, but the pace at which GWM has accumulated sales suggests the brand is not treating it as a distant aspiration.

Continued investment in local engineering, validation programmes, and dealer infrastructure underpins that push. Whether the momentum holds as the market grows more crowded with EV and hybrid options will be the real test, but 250,000 sales in a market that once barely knew the name is a reasonable foundation to build on.
