BMW Motorrad New Zealand Launches the All-New F 450 GS

BMW Motorrad has officially expanded its legendary GS adventure family in New Zealand with the arrival of the all-new BMW F 450 GS, a motorcycle designed to bridge the gap between lightweight accessibility and genuine adventure-bike capability. Tarmac Life joined BMW Motorrad New Zealand and Continental BMW for the local launch, getting a first-hand look at what could become one of the most important new GS models in recent years.

While the GS badge is often associated with large capacity machines such as the legendary BMW R 1300 GS, the F 450 GS takes a different approach. Rather than chasing outright size and power, BMW has focused on creating a lighter, more approachable adventure motorcycle that still delivers the capability and technology riders expect from the GS name.

At the heart of the new machine is a completely new 420cc parallel-twin engine producing 48 horsepower and 43Nm of torque. The engine has been developed specifically for the F 450 GS and uses a 135-degree crankshaft offset to improve character and deliver a more engaging sound while maintaining smooth delivery and operation. BMW says the combination of low weight and usable performance makes the bike equally at home on daily commutes, weekend adventures and longer touring routes.

One of the headline numbers is weight. Tipping the scales at just 178kg, the F 450 GS is significantly lighter than many middleweight adventure motorcycles currently on the market. That lower mass should make the bike less intimidating for newer riders while also improving agility and confidence when tackling gravel roads and technical terrain.

BMW has ensured the newcomer doesn’t sacrifice technology in pursuit of simplicity. Standard equipment includes a 6.5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity, traction control, ABS Pro, Dynamic Engine Brake Control, full LED lighting and multiple riding modes. Riders also benefit from adjustable suspension, with a 43mm upside-down front fork and a rear shock featuring BMW’s new damping system.

A particularly interesting innovation is BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch system, which reduces the need for manual clutch operation at low speeds, making stop-start traffic and technical off-road riding easier and less fatiguing. This is not common in this slice of the market, and BMW believes the feature could help make adventure riding more accessible to a broader audience.

Visually, the F 450 GS draws heavily from its larger GS siblings, as it should. The distinctive GS flyline, aggressive bodywork and signature X-shaped LED daytime running light immediately identify it as part of BMW’s famous adventure family. The bike is available in multiple colour schemes, including the eye-catching GS Trophy specification that most closely resembles the concept machine first shown to the public.

The arrival of the F 450 GS is particularly significant because it approaches an important segment, and with a motorcycle that feels far more purpose-built. The combination of a twin engine, modern electronics package, genuine off-road credentials and manageable dimensions places it in one of the fastest growing, and more interesting quadrantes of the global motorcycle market.

Following time spent with the bike during the New Zealand launch programme hosted by BMW Motorrad Continental, it’s clear that BMW isn’t treating the F 450 GS as a beginner’s compromise. It appears to be a genuine GS distilled into a lighter, more approachable package, aimed at attracting new riders while still appealing to experienced adventurers looking to downsize without giving up capability – their words!

For BMW Motorrad, the F 450 GS may well prove that adventure riding isn’t about how big your motorcycle is. It’s about where you’re willing to take it: New Zealand is our playground, after all!
