Following the successful launch of the new Q5 range (which has shattered all previous sales records since its New Zealand debut) Audi is riding a wave of momentum that the Q3 is expected to amplify.

One of the most significant developments in the new Q3 is its diverse powertrain lineup, designed to cater to varying performance preferences and environmental considerations. The range kicks off with a sensible entry-level option: a front-wheel-drive Q3 SUV powered by a 1.5-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine producing 110 kW and 250 Nm. This variant incorporates mild hybrid technology and Audi’s clever cylinder-on-demand (COD) system, which temporarily deactivates cylinders under lighter loads to optimise fuel consumption, a practical consideration for daily New Zealand driving.

For those seeking more spirited performance, the 2.0-litre TFSI variant delivers 195 kW and 400 Nm of torque, paired with Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system. This setup will be available in both traditional SUV and the sleeker Sportback configurations, offering drivers the choice between practicality and coupé-inspired styling.

The headline-grabber, however, is the Q3 SUV e-hybrid. Combining a 1.5 TFSI engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 200 kW and 400 Nm, this plug-in hybrid variant features a high-voltage battery with a gross capacity of 25.7 kWh—nearly double that of its predecessor. The result? An impressive electric range of up to 111 km in the WLTP test cycle, with the capability to charge at up to 50 kW DC under ideal conditions.

The new Q3 presents a more refined and athletic exterior compared to its predecessor. Its wide Singleframe grille and sharply tapered headlights integrate seamlessly into the aerodynamic design, creating a bold, modern presence that’s unmistakably Audi. A horizontal shoulder line running between the headlights and rear lights creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, visually dividing the body and enhancing its sculpted appearance.

The Sportback variant adds an extra dose of elegance to the package. With a roofline that slopes 29 mm lower than the standard SUV, it delivers a sportier silhouette while retaining the practical benefits of SUV ownership, easy entry, excellent visibility, and a versatile interior layout.

There will be a choice of ten exterior colours, including fresh additions like Sage Green and Madeira Brown. Notably, Madeira Brown is offered as a matte finish exclusive to the Q3 range. In a first for Audi’s compact segment, the Q3 also features acoustic glazing for the front side windows, significantly enhancing cabin quietness, a welcome touch for long-distance touring across New Zealand.

Inside, the new Q3 showcases a thoughtfully refined cabin that prioritizes both comfort and functionality. The high-contrast ‘Softwrap’ design extends from the doors across the dashboard, emphasizing horizontal lines that enhance the sense of spaciousness.

Practicality hasn’t been overlooked. The Q3 SUV offers up to 488 litres of boot space, expanding to an impressive 1,386 litres with the rear seats folded. A sliding and adjustable rear seat bench comes standard, adding flexibility for passengers and cargo alike—perfect for everything from weekend getaways to hardware store runs.

Audi’s commitment to digital excellence is evident in the Q3’s tech suite. The centrepiece is a 12.8-inch MMI touch display paired with an 11.9-inch instrument cluster, bringing the digital experience of Audi’s full-size models into the compact segment. A head-up display supplements key driving information, keeping critical data in the driver’s line of sight.

The new Audi assistant (a voice-controlled AI avatar) enables intuitive control of numerous vehicle functions. This intelligent system appears on the central MMI display and, when active, also in the head-up display and virtual cockpit.

For the first time in this model range, digital Matrix LED headlights with micro-LED modules come standard across the entire lineup. Drivers can personalize their experience by selecting from three dynamic coming/leaving home lighting animations via the MMI. On the 195 kW SUV and Sportback models, digital OLED rear lights add a premium touch to the rear design.

The Q3’s comprehensive suite of driver assistance features includes adaptive driving assistant plus, offering both longitudinal and lateral guidance enhanced with lane change assist. A standout innovation is the emergency assist system, which can autonomously steer the vehicle to the shoulder and bring it to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. An interior camera monitors driver alertness, triggering warnings if signs of drowsiness or distraction are detected.

With its arrival scheduled for March 2026, the new Audi Q3 represents a significant leap forward for the premium compact SUV segment. The combination of efficient powertrains (including the impressive plug-in hybrid option) cutting-edge technology, and refined design should make it a compelling choice for New Zealand buyers seeking premium quality without full-size dimensions. We didn’t get to drive it just yet, but stay tuned as we’ve booked it in for early next year.
