Modern safety tech is changing how we drive – but there’s a catch

Welcome to the world of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS, the automotive equivalent of having a very nervous co-pilot who’s actually quite good at their job.
AMI’s freshly released Motor Report has dropped some fascinating insights that’ll make you reconsider your relationship with technology. Over the past year, they’ve processed more than 235,000 vehicle claims, with collisions accounting for nearly 60% of the carnage. But here’s where it gets interesting: collision claims have been steadily declining by 7% each year since 2023, and it’s happening precisely as more Kiwis embrace vehicles equipped with ADAS.
The Tech That’s Saving Our Bumpers (And Our Pride)
So what exactly is ADAS? Think automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring, and parking sensors that practically scream at you when you’re about to embarrass yourself in front of the New World carpark. It’s the automotive industry’s answer to our collective inability to check our blind spots consistently.
The data tells a compelling story. Among AMI customers with ADAS-equipped vehicles, 70% reported that improved safety was the main benefit. Compare that to the 55% of non-ADAS users who felt the same way about their vehicles, and you’ve got a pretty clear winner.
But perhaps the most relatable stat? A full 12% of ADAS users admitted they wouldn’t have the confidence to reverse parallel park without their electronic guardian angel. We see you, and we’re not judging.
Where Kiwis Are Having Their “Oops” Moments
AMI hasn’t just counted the collisions, they’ve mapped them like cartographers of chaos. Auckland dominates the national top 10 collision hotspots, with Great South Road claiming the dubious honour of first place, followed by Ti Rakau Drive and Great North Road. Christchurch’s Moorhouse Avenue also made the hall of shame.
The real kicker? Most of these incidents happen at low speeds in busy city streets and car parks. We’re talking about the mundane disasters: concrete walls that jump out of nowhere, wing mirrors versus poles (the poles always win), and objects hiding in blind spots like automotive ninjas.
Some mishaps border on the theatrical. Picture this: gear mix-ups sending cars lurching into buildings, forgotten handbrakes leading to vehicles rolling into the sea, and (perhaps the most Kiwi story ever) footwear/jandals getting wedged between pedals. You couldn’t write this stuff.
The Generation Game – Who’s Crashing and Who’s Cruising?
Here’s where things get spicy. Gen Z drivers face the highest collision risk, with a staggering 35.5% of their policies involving a collision claim. Meanwhile, Millennials cruise by with the lowest risk at just 11%, followed by Gen X (14%), Baby Boomers (14.4%), and the Silent Generation (16%).
Before the Millennials start their victory lap, there’s context: younger drivers typically pilot older vehicles (around 16-20 years old) that lack ADAS and modern safety features. It’s harder to avoid accidents when your car was manufactured before smartphones existed.
Interestingly, 52% of drivers under 40 want ADAS in their next vehicle, suggesting younger generations are keenly aware of the benefits even if they can’t access them yet.
The Human Element – Why We’re Still Essential
Dean MacGregor, AMI’s Executive General Manager Hub Services, puts it perfectly: “ADAS is the co-pilot and not the driver. ADAS can’t replace our attention and judgment – and ultimately, it’s our hands on the wheel”.
This is crucial. While ADAS reduces driving anxiety and genuinely prevents accidents, it’s not a substitute for engaged driving. Think of it as spell-check for driving – incredibly helpful, but you still need to write the essay.
Tarmac Takeaway – Looking Ahead
AMI’s partnership with Road Safety Education to support the nationwide Ryda programme shows they’re investing in the human element too. The programme equips high school students with knowledge and skills to make safe choices as drivers and passengers, recognizing that safe habits form when we first learn to drive.
The message is clear: technology is transforming road safety for the better, but it’s the combination of smart systems and smarter humans that’ll get us where we need to go, preferably without denting the bumper on Great South Road.
