The Omoda 4 Ultra – Wild, Lambo looks but more passive performance

Squint hard. See it? That blast of ‘Electro Yellow’ with angles sharper than a geometry set. No it isn’t the latest V12 beast to roll out of Sant’Agata, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so. This is the Omoda 4 Ultra, and it’s what happens when designers are given a double-shot espresso and told to create a B-segment crossover for the TikTok generation.

Freshly unveiled at the ‘Dream Day 2025’ part of the Omoda & Jaecoo International User Summit 2025 in Wuhu, China, the Omoda 4 Ultra is the more rebellious sibling of the already bold Omoda 4. While the standard model is eye-catching, the Ultra turns the dial, it’s a riot of aerodynamic aggression, a clear signal that Omoda isn’t interested in making cars that blend into the background. This is a car designed to be seen, to be photographed, and to make its Japanese rivals look decidedly beige.

Supercar Style on a (what we assume) is a Sensible Budget

Let’s be honest, the styling is the main event here. Omoda has thrown the entire performance catalogue at the 4 Ultra, and the result is spectacular. The front end is dominated by an extended splitter that looks like it could scrape barnacles off a whale, while the side profile is sharpened with aggressive skirts and flamboyant carbon fibre side mirror caps.

Move to the back, and the drama continues. The rear diffuser is pure motorsport, but it’s the massive, aggressive rear wing that truly steals the show. It’s a bold piece of design that screams performance, even when the car is standing still. The whole package is draped in a special ‘Electro Yellow’ paint that seems to glow from within. To complete the look, the Ultra sits on unique 19-inch alloy rims, which provide a tantalising peek at the matching yellow-hued brake calipers hiding behind them.

Is it a Lamborghini Urus? No, of course not. But in a sea of homogenous crossovers, the Omoda 4 Ultra has the same kind of head-turning, disruptive energy. It’s a slice of affordable exoticism, proving that you don’t need a six-figure bank account to own something that looks like it landed from another planet.

A Cockpit for the Digital Generation

Step inside, and the sci-fi theme continues with a cabin that Omoda describes as having a “gaming-inspired layout”. Forget boring dashboards and grey plastics; this is a cockpit designed for engagement and theatre. The first thing you’ll notice is the jet fighter-style ignition button on the centre console, a wonderfully tactile touch that makes starting the car feel like an event.

Your eyes are then drawn to the massive, portrait-oriented central infotainment screen, which handles everything from navigation to climate control. It’s paired with a slim, wide digital instrument cluster that provides all the essential driving information in a crisp, clear format. The sporty front seats feature hexagonal quilt inserts and provide plenty of support, while ambient lighting and a full panoramic glass roof add a premium, airy feel to the cabin.

Omoda has even added a feature called ‘Performance Sound’ mode. When you select the Sport driving mode and put your foot down, the car plays an EV-style synthetic soundtrack through the speakers. It’s a bit of fun, a digital warble for a digital age, and perfectly in keeping with the car’s playful character.

Performance – More Sibling Rivalry Than Supercar Slayer

So, it has the looks of a supercar and an interior from a spaceship. Surely it has the performance to match? Well, not really. Underneath the wild bodywork lies Omoda & Jaecoo’s own Super Hybrid System (SHS). This clever powertrain combines a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (rated at 143 PS and 215 Nm) with a potent single electric motor that delivers 204 PS and 310 Nm on its own.

In a hybrid system, these power figures don’t simply add together to create a final output. Instead, a sophisticated computer manages the flow of power from both the engine and the motor to deliver the best blend of performance and efficiency for any given situation. The result is a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

While those numbers are more than respectable for a compact hybrid crossover, they won’t be giving Lamborghini drivers any sleepless nights. In a fascinating twist, the Ultra’s performance is actually more comparable to one of its own family members. The hybrid system is believed to be the same parallel hybrid (HEV) setup found in the far more sedate Jaecoo J5 HEV family SUV. This means that beneath the Ultra’s outlandish exterior is a proven, efficient powertrain shared with its more sensible cousin. Omoda even claims this system can deliver a comprehensive range of up to 1,000 km, blending its sporty aspirations with impressive real-world usability.
