In a collaboration that feels both surprising and perfectly natural, MINI has teamed up with the iconic lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina to create two exclusive, one-off John Cooper Works vehicles. This isn’t just a simple sticker pack; it’s a deep dive into the shared cultures of motorsport heritage, creative design, and a love for beautifully crafted machines. The result is a pair of kindred spirits with opposing energies: one born of the coast and the other forged on the track.
The partnership celebrates a philosophy of “passion for machines, innovation and creativity” and a respect for the communities that surround them, according to MINI’s head, Stefan Richmann. Both cars are based on MINI John Cooper Works models, but they represent two very different expressions of performance. To visually link them, each features a large white ‘X’ on the roof, signalling the co-creation between these two iconic brands.
The design approach is described as purist, functional, and graphic, with a focus on a ‘raw, handcrafted approach’ that celebrates the ‘beauty of imperfection’ rather than glossy perfection. This means visible seams, bold contrasts, and tactile mechanical controls like toggle switches and levers.
The Skeg – The Electric Soul Surfer
The first of the pair is ‘The Skeg’, an all-electric MINI JCW that is a “clean, minimal and quiet rebellion”. Drawing its soul from the world of surfing, it uses materials and philosophies from surfboard shaping to create a car at home on the coast.
Its bodywork makes a statement in a vivid yellow and silver finish, a nod to MINI’s electric mobility future. The aggressive silhouette is sharpened by wide fenders and a roof spoiler, but the real story is in the materials. Semitransparent fibreglass panels have been used, stripping an impressive 15% of the car’s weight while refining its aerodynamics. At the back, a unique ‘Flex Tip Surf Spoiler’ is designed to respond to airflow just as a surfboard rides a wave.
Inside, the surf theme is even more pronounced. The analogue controls are stripped back and tactile, and the upholstery on the lightweight racing bucket seats is made from water-repellent neoprene. The dashboard itself is constructed from fibreglass, directly transferring surfboard technology to the car, while specially shaped fibreglass trays provide a clever storage solution for wetsuits.
The Machina – The Combustion-Fed Track Weapon
In the other corner is ‘The Machina’, a combustion-powered JCW that is described as “loud, low, and combustion-fed”. This car is all about raw mechanics and its motorsport bloodline, standing for pure racing enthusiasm.
Its exterior is a direct homage to MINI’s racing heritage, wrapped in a classic red, white, and black paint scheme with bold Deus lettering. Four additional rally-style headlights are mounted on the bonnet, while at the rear, a functional diffuser draws inspiration from the MINI JCW race car that has tackled the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. A centrally integrated exhaust amplifies the engine’s sound, and a massive Can-Am-style rear spoiler completes the aggressive, track-ready look.
The interior is just as purposeful. Drivers are secured by five-point racing harnesses, and raw aluminium floor plates replace carpets, echoing the aesthetic of Deus’s custom motorcycle workshops. Weight-saving is evident everywhere, from stripped-back door panels to a waxed fabric dash, all surrounding the driver with an exposed roll cage and a bank of functional toggle switches, including a large lever for a hydraulic handbrake. It’s a pure, mechanical connection between the driver and the machine.
