It’s the little car that could. For 50 years, the Volkswagen Polo has been a familiar sight on roads around the globe, evolving from a humble, no-frills supermini into a sophisticated and surprisingly premium hatch. Now, to celebrate its golden anniversary, the Polo has been given a truly monumental accolade: Best Car of the Half Century.
This major honour was bestowed by the Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships, announced just ahead of this year’s British Motor Show. It seems Volkswagen is making a habit of this, with the award echoing the same title given to the Golf for its 50th birthday just last year.

What Makes a Half-Century Champion?
So, how does a car earn such a title? According to the judges—an esteemed panel of world-renowned designers, engineers, journalists, and motorsport personalities—the Polo has consistently hit the mark for five decades.

Mike Rutherford, an automotive journalist and founder of the awards, summed it up perfectly: “The 20 million motorists who have been buying Volkswagen Polos since 1975 cannot be wrong.”. He praised the Polo for being the “most consistently credible supermini of the past 50 years,” highlighting its perfect balance of understated design, build quality, competitive pricing, and low running costs.
Rutherford also noted the Polo’s impressive evolution. What began in 1975 as a basic city car has grown in “size, stature, quality and market relevance.”. The current Mk6 version, at over four metres long, is now considered a “small, credible, borderline premium family hatchback,” a testament to its enduring appeal and ability to adapt. Its continued success is undeniable, with the Polo remaining one of Europe’s top 20 best-selling cars last year.

A Legacy of Sales and Speed
With an incredible 20 million units sold worldwide across six generations, the Polo stands as one of Volkswagen’s most successful models ever. It has always embodied the idea of affordable, accessible mobility—a true “car for everyone.”.
But don’t mistake its practicality for a lack of personality. The Polo has a fiery side, summed up by the phrase ‘Small but mighty’. This isn’t just marketing fluff; the Polo has serious performance credentials. In the World Rally Championship, the Polo R WRC was a dominant force, securing an impressive four world titles. For those of us on the tarmac, legendary models like the GT and G40 have provided thrills over the years, a legacy carried on today by the ever-popular GTI.
The Polo is a cornerstone of the Volkswagen brand, which continues to be a global powerhouse. VW delivered around 4.8 million vehicles worldwide in 2024 and remains the UK’s best-selling new-car brand for the fourth consecutive year.

For 50 years, the Polo has quietly, competently, and brilliantly served millions. It’s a car that has defined a segment, offering quality, durability, and a touch of class without breaking the bank. A deserving winner of a massive award.
