In the time it takes most of us to successfully keep a houseplant alive, BYD has managed to build and sell one million examples of its compact electric superstar, the DOLPHIN SURF (aka Seagull). Yes, you read that correctly. One. Million. Rolled out from its home factory in Xi’an, China, this plucky little EV hit its massive production milestone in just 27 months, making it the fastest-selling car in its segment in history. It seems the world has a serious appetite for these electric sea creatures.
What’s in a Name?
In fairness, we have yet to discover this little cutie here in NZ, and to add to some of its confusing traits, this car is a master of disguise, travelling the globe under various aliases. In its homeland of China, it’s the SEAGULL, and in Latin America, it answers to the DOLPHIN MINI. But as BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li points out, regardless of the name on the boot, “its recipe for success is pure and simple: an accessible zero-emissions vehicle that’s practical and flexible for everyday use in cities and beyond, and packed with BYD’s useful technologies”. It’s a global hit that’s breaking down barriers to EV ownership one city at a time, especially in Europe where the compact EV market is still budding.
The Not-So-Secret Sauce
So, how do you sell a million cars so quickly? You start by making it ridiculously clever. Measuring just under four metres long, the DOLPHIN SURF is perfectly sized for the urban jungle, happy to dive into tight parking spots that would make a larger SUV sweat. But thanks to BYD’s ingenious e-Platform 3.0, it performs a TARDIS-like trick on the inside, offering cabin and boot space that rivals cars from the class above. It’s the ideal single-car solution for small families or professionals who need a car that can do it all without a fossil fuel habit.
Pick Your Flavour
In Europe, the DOLPHIN SURF doesn’t just come in one flavour. The line-up kicks off with the ‘Active’ trim, pairing a 30kWh battery with a peppy 65kW motor. Need to go further? The ‘Boost’ model keeps the motor but upgrades to a 43.2kWh battery, delivering a very respectable 322km of WLTP range and a whopping 502km for city driving alone. But if you want the full-fat version, the range-topping ‘Comfort’ is your ticket. It takes that bigger battery and bolts it to a class-leading 115kW motor, good for a 0-100km/h sprint in a zippy 9.1 seconds.

The best part? You don’t get short-changed on tech, even with the entry-level model. Every single DOLPHIN SURF comes with a treasure chest of standard kit, including a 10.1-inch rotatable touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, and even Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, so you can power your laptop or a coffee machine from your car at a picnic. It’s a feature list that would make some premium cars blush. Stepping up to Boost and Comfort trims adds even more goodies like heated seats, a 360-degree camera, and wireless phone charging, turning this compact EV into a proper little luxury pod.
The production of the millionth DOLPHIN SURF isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet for BYD; it’s a statement.
