Toyota New Zealand (TNZ) has just driven straight into the heart of Aotearoa’s national sport—partnering with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) as the Official Training Kit Partner in a three-year deal that ensures Toyota branding will be turning heads at every scrum, ruck, and sprint session across the nation’s much-loved Teams in Black.
Let’s put it in park for a moment and admire how this partnership is a match made in Kiwi heaven. Both Toyota and rugby are essentially woven into the fabric of New Zealand life: Toyota has been the country’s favorite car brand for over three decades, its cars found everywhere from the far north of Whangarei to the deep south of Invercargill—the only places you’re more likely to see a Toyota than a rugby ball. Now, with this agreement, Toyota branding will soon be sharing space with some of the most recognizable jerseys in world sport as the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Māori All Blacks, All Blacks Sevens, Black Ferns Sevens, All Blacks XV, and New Zealand Under 20s sport Toyota logos on their training kits and gear.
NZR CEO Mark Robinson can barely contain his excitement: “Toyota is a highly respected and incredibly well-known brand, and we are excited about what we can achieve together… The shared values and strategic alignment between our organisations have made this partnership a natural fit.” In other words, both are legends in their own right—one moves people, the other moves ball and nation, and now both will “Let’s Go Places” (as Toyota would say) together.
TNZ CEO Tatsuya Ishikawa is similarly revved up, calling it a “big moment” to unite with NZR and bring even more Kiwis on the journey toward a more mobile—and, presumably, more rugby-filled—future. Given Toyota’s ambition to transition from just moving cars to moving people, this partnership with a sport that unites communities from the grassroots all the way to the top probably feels like a perfect tackle.
And make no mistake: this is more than just an exercise in logo placement. For Toyota, this deal is a global play, but it’s the local engagement—supporting the All Blacks, Black Ferns and the rest as they train, travel, and inspire—that really fires up the engine. Black Ferns coach Allan Bunting sums up the spirit beautifully: “The success of our teams is as much about who we have on the field as we do off it,” highlighting how success is a true team effort—one where even the biggest sponsors are now part of the whānau.
The wheels on this partnership start turning as soon as June, with Toyota branding making their training kit debut—first sighted on the Māori All Blacks as they head to Japan on June 28. If this alliance runs as smoothly as a finely-tuned Hilux engine, expect to see Toyota’s involvement at every key moment in the rugby calendar, and maybe even around your local club.
After all, what’s more Kiwi than a tough-as-nails rugby match and a trusty Toyota waiting in the carpark? With mutual values, a shared spirit, and a genuine passion for connecting communities, NZR and Toyota’s partnership looks set to go the distance—and if they ever need a new game plan, well, there’s always the glovebox.
