GWM has unveiled its latest mechanical masterpiece – the Cannon Alpha PHEV – proving that going green doesn’t mean compromising on grunt.
This isn’t your grandmother’s hybrid – it’s a tire-shredding, mud-slinging powerhouse that laughs in the face of range anxiety. With a whopping 300kW of combined power and 750Nm of torque, this electrified utility vehicle is more muscle than mild-mannered .
“It’s like Batman went eco-friendly but kept all the gadgets,” quips industry expert Steve Maciver, Head of Marketing & Communications at GWM. “We’re redefining electrification without asking customers to sacrifice their weekend adventures”.
Priced from AU$63,990 drive-away for the Lux model, with the Ultra variant commanding AU$68,990, the Cannon Alpha PHEV isn’t just flexing its muscles – it’s showing off its brains too. The vehicle boasts an impressive 110km pure electric range, enough to handle most daily commutes without sipping a drop of dinosaur juice.
But here’s where it gets interesting: while other PHEVs might shy away from rough terrain, the Cannon Alpha embraces it with open arms. With front, rear, and centre locking differentials, it’s like a mountain goat with a PhD in rock climbing. And with an 800mm water wading depth, it could probably moonlight as a submarine.

The Ultra model, in particular, comes loaded with enough tech to make Silicon Valley jealous. We’re talking a panoramic sunroof, a massive 14.6-inch touchscreen, and seats that heat, cool, and massage – because why shouldn’t your utilities vehicle double as a spa?
For the environmentally conscious adventurer, the vehicle offers V2L capabilities with 3.3kW output – perfect for powering your campsite without having to lug around a generator. It’s essentially a power station on wheels .
GWM backs this mechanical marvel with an 8-year/unlimited KM battery warranty and 7-year/unlimited KM vehicle warranty, suggesting they’re pretty confident about its longevity.
With customer deliveries commencing in April 2025, the Cannon Alpha PHEV isn’t just another entry in the utility segment – it’s a statement that the future of tough trucks doesn’t have to be all smoke and mirrors. It can be electric too, and still tow your boat (up to 3,500kg of it).
Just remember, as with all PHEVs, your actual range may vary depending on factors like traffic conditions and whether you’re drag racing between traffic lights . But with 880km of combined range, you’re more likely to need a bathroom break before the Cannon Alpha needs a pit stop.
