Beware beachgoers, Aucklanders are scratching their heads (and their skin) over an unwelcome invasion of sea lice across the city’s popular beaches, transforming every dip into a seaside horror story. Swimmers from Mission Bay to Red Beach and beyond are finding their relaxing beach days marred by itchy red rashes caused by these tiny marine marauders.
Reports have turned social media into an itch-fest, with concerned parents comparing the symptoms to chickenpox. “My boy went swimming yesterday and got mauled by sea lice,” recounted one parent about their experience at Stanmore Bay. “I was panicking,” admitted another after their kids emerged from the water “absolutely covered” in stings.
Experts blame the warmer-than-usual waters for creating a coastal paradise for these minuscule critters, which can grow up to 1.5mm and are infamous for causing “seabather’s eruption” an itchy rash that thrives on covered areas of the skin . Dr. Rachael Peart, a marine crustacean expert, confirmed that the increased heat suits their pesky lifestyle perfectly.
From Beachlands in east Auckland to Waiheke Island’s tourist hotspot Onetangi, no beach seems safe from this underwater army. Auckland Council has issued warnings for swimmers and recommended treatments such as calamine lotion, antihistamines, and mild steroid creams. However, these measures may do little to soothe the emotional trauma of a day ruined by these uninvited beach guests.
As Aucklanders cling to their antihistamines, the city’s beaches may need a new slogan: “Come for the sun, stay for the sea lice!” Just beware, they might leave you scratching for days.
