In the grand scale of things, 50km is barely a blip, however, should you find yourself running a 42.195km marathon or having to walk a similar distance to the petrol station because you’ve run out, I’m certain that 50km is a BIG deal. And 50km is the magical addition in range on the new Mercedes-Benz EQA 250+ and EQB 250+ (the emphasis being the PLUS).
You see the range has been extended by around 50km on both models and although that’s but 30mins on the motorway, I discovered that it makes a huge difference to a week in both EVs.
Firstly, let’s talk about the models. The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250+ and EQB 250+ are two distinct personalities within Mercedes-Benz’s electric lineup. The EQA is the sleeker, more youthful sibling with a compact SUV look that feels made for cityscapes, while the EQB offers a bolder, more family-focused vibe with its boxier design and added versatility.
The decision comes down to lifestyle priorities. Are you an urban dweller with a penchant for style who occasionally takes longer weekend trips? Or are you looking for flexibility, space, and a vehicle that can handle the needs of both passengers and cargo without sacrificing luxury?
The EQA 250+ looks modern and unmistakably premium, with a flowing silhouette that makes it look smaller than it is. With its clean lines, LED light bar across the front and back, and a star studded Mercedes-Benz grille, it blends into urban environments with ease. This is the car you’ll want if you care about aesthetics as much as practicality, a lifestyle accessory as much as a mode of transport.
On the other hand, the EQB 250+’s design leans toward functionality. It’s chunkier and more upright, giving off GLB vibes (its gas-powered sibling), but its LED light bar and refined details bring a clean, modern electric aesthetic. The boxier proportions make it less about turning heads and more about getting the job done, be that accommodating a family of five or packing in bikes for a weekend getaway.
Slip inside the EQA 250+, and you’ll find a cabin that feels snug yet premium. The signature Mercedes-Benz dual widescreen setup dominates the dashboard, offering a futuristic vibe. The materials are top-notch, from soft-touch elements to the more sustainable upholstery options and the dash carries on with the grille’s star theme. However, the EQA’s compact dimensions limit space, rear-seat legroom is best for short adults or children, and the boot (at 340L) won’t handle big grocery hauls or luggage for a family without some creativity.
Entering the EQB 250+ feels remarkably different due to its generous space and its third row means that it’s a seven seater (though the last row works best for occasional use – more kids only). So more room for passengers and cargo with its larger boot (465L). It’s a much more accommodating interior for daily errands, carpools, or road trips, and the upright seating position is also a plus for visibility and comfort.
Now comes the power. Both models are powered by an electric drivetrain that feels refined and effortless. With the EQA 250+ and EQB 250+, you’ll benefit from their extended battery ranges, making them viable for both city commutes and longer weekend drives.
The EQA 250+’s lighter and smaller proportions make it more agile and engaging to drive. It feels quick off the mark, with smooth acceleration and enough punch for zipping through city traffic. The suspension strikes a balance between sporty and comfortable, but you’ll notice bumps a bit more than in the larger EQB. The bigger story here is the extended range (WLTP-rated around 530 km), which means worry-free city commutes all week. On longer drives, the EQA’s quiet cabin promotes relaxation, but its smaller size might feel limiting if you’re used to SUVs.
While the EQB 250+’s driving character is less sporty and more comfort-oriented, it’s still undeniably smooth and easy to handle. The extra weight and bulk are apparent in corners, but this is a car designed for families, not thrill-seekers. The EQB matches the EQA’s range (also WLTP-rated 530 km), so road trips are equally viable. On the highway or navigating suburbs, the EQB exudes a sense of calm and dependability that complements its family-friendly image.
Both the EQA and EQB share the same charging capabilities, with DC fast charging up to 100 kW, meaning a 10-80% charge takes around 30 minutes. At home with an AC wallbox, they’ll fully charge in just under 7 hours.
I picked up both models boasting over 95% charge, and evidently the EQA 250+ had been driven more briskly before as it claimed 297km of range vs the EQB 250+’s 446km. Either way, I used both in a very similar fashion for the week, with multiple trips and commutes (with and without the family), plus a couple of solo performances. The end result was that I returned both EQ’s with 35% (A) and 38% (B) charge and 144km/179km respectively – both running on around 22kWh efficiency.
But here’s the really big thing for me. That additional 50km made all the difference in the anxiety realm. Dropping below the 100km range is like having the yellow fuel light go on in an ICE powered vehicle of old, and along with it goes my anxiety levels (I don’t have a home charger). So having a week with an EV and still remaining WELL over the 100km threshold was a real winner.
So that leaves me with this closing thought. Choosing between the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250+ and EQB 250+ boils down to one key question: What do you need from your car?
The EQA 250+ is perfect for young professionals, couples, or individuals who want premium style, sufficient range, and a compact size for city living and occasional getaways. It’s the chic choice, minimalist, efficient, and fun to drive in urban environments.
The EQB 250+, meanwhile, is the ultimate family companion or versatile SUV for drivers with more cargo or passenger needs. It doesn’t compromise on premium features while offering extra space and flexibility for people with busier lives or larger households.
