When disaster strikes, the whine of a siren is a sound of hope. But what happens when that disaster has wiped out the very roads the ambulance needs to travel on? What if the emergency is deep in the bush, up a rugged mountain track, or across a flooded plain? For most emergency vehicles, that’s where the mission ends. For the TORSUS TERRASTORM 4×4 Ambulance, that’s just where it gets started.
TORSUS, the Czech manufacturer of the world’s toughest off-road buses, has just unleashed the next generation of its TERRASTORM Ambulance, and it’s a beast. Billed as the planet’s most capable 4×4 ambulance, it has received a swathe of technical upgrades designed to get medics and their life-saving equipment to the most remote and inhospitable locations imaginable.

What Makes the TERRASTORM a Go-Anywhere Lifesaver?
At its core, the TERRASTORM is built on the proven and rugged architecture of the Volkswagen Crafter van, paired with a MAN TGE 4Motion drivetrain. This is a purpose-built emergency response vehicle engineered from the ground up for extreme duty. Its core mission is to deliver medical aid in situations where conventional ambulances are rendered useless, whether by natural disaster, conflict, or simply a complete lack of infrastructure.
As TORSUS Founder and CEO, Vakhtang Dzhukashvili, puts it, the TERRASTORM is a unique solution. It’s perfectly comfortable performing standard duties in urban environments, but its “operational ability does not end when the road ends.” From mountain rescue and flood response to providing medical support at remote industrial sites, it’s designed to find a way through.

The Heart of the Beast: Power and Off-Road Prowess
Under the bonnet lies a workhorse 2.0-litre, four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, churning out a hefty 410Nm of torque to get its bulk moving over tough obstacles. But the real magic lies in how that power gets to the ground. The TERRASTORM features the Torsus 4×4 HD system, complete with locking differentials on the front and rear axles, plus a locking centre diff and a low-range transfer case. For the uninitiated, this means the driver can force all four wheels to rotate at the same speed, ensuring maximum possible traction when crawling over rocks, through deep mud, or up slippery inclines. It’s the kind of hardware you find on the most serious off-road weapons.
The latest generation doubles down on this capability. It boasts new proactive suspension and a 40mm ride height increase, giving it superior ground clearance. The entire underbody is shielded with heavy-duty protection, and the lower section of the body is coated with a special corrosion-resistant, anti-scratch coating far more durable than standard automotive paint.
Perhaps most impressively, TORSUS has addressed one of the biggest enemies of any off-roader: water. A new snorkel allows the engine to breathe clean air high above the water line, while a comprehensive breather kit for the axles, transmission, and transfer case is routed high into the engine bay. This prevents water from being sucked into critical drivetrain components during deep crossings. These enhancements give the TERRASTORM an official wading depth of 520mm, allowing it to confidently traverse flooded areas that would stop other vehicles dead in their tracks.

A Mobile Emergency Room, No Matter the Terrain
A tough truck is one thing, but an ambulance needs to be a sterile, highly-equipped medical facility on wheels. TORSUS delivers on this by offering the TERRASTORM in Type A, B, and C ambulance specifications. These range from Type A for lower-urgency patient transport, to Type B for rapid intervention, and all the way to Type C, which is essentially a mobile intensive care unit. The interior is a fully customizable medical bay, fitted with robust noise insulation, easy-to-clean surfaces, and dedicated electrical and oxygen supply systems. Working with specialist partners, TORSUS can equip the vehicle with everything needed to preserve life, including defibrillators, ventilators, syringe pumps, electrocardiograph machines, orthopedic boards, and more. The exterior is just as professional, featuring EU-compliant Battenburg markings, a powerful siren and loudspeaker system, and a suite of emergency LED beacons on the roof, bumpers, and mirrors to clear a path.#### Global Support for a Global Vehicle

TORSUS understands that a vehicle like this could be deployed anywhere in the world. With a starting price of €130,000, it’s a serious investment in life-saving capability. To back this up, the vehicle is fully supported by the global Volkswagen and MAN service networks, ensuring that maintenance and parts are available even in remote regions. Each TERRASTORM Ambulance comes with a two-year global drivetrain warranty, which can be extended to five years or 500,000km in certain markets.
The TORSUS TERRASTORM is engineered to bridge the gap between a patient and life-saving care, no matter what lies in the way.
