The Tata Nexon, a plucky subcompact SUV that has dominated India’s sales charts, is getting ready for its next big act. Since its debut in 2017, the Nexon has been the little engine that could, winning over buyers with a combination of robust safety, modern looks, and a buffet of powertrain choices. But in the cut-throat world of small SUVs, resting on your laurels is a one-way ticket to obscurity. With competition getting fiercer, Tata has decided it’s time for a complete overhaul, scheduling the second-generation model for a launch in the latter half of 2026.
So, what can we expect from the all-new Nexon? Think of it less as a sequel and more as a full-on reboot.
A Familiar Foundation, But Better
Rather than starting from a clean sheet, Tata is opting for a resto-mod approach. The 2026 Nexon will reportedly ride on a heavily modified version of its current X1 platform. While some might scoff at the lack of an “all-new” chassis, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This architecture, which also underpinned the now-discontinued Zest and Bolt, has been beefed up over the years to support modern necessities like electronic and speed-sensitive power steering. It’s a proven base that already delivers on the “best-in-class safety” promise that is a key USP for the current model.
Dressed to Impress
Here’s where things get exciting. The next-gen Nexon is set for “significant cosmetic changes,” with design cues likely borrowed from the jaw-dropping Tata Curvv concept. If the Curvv is anything to go by, expect a sharper, more futuristic, and coupe-like profile that will make the new Nexon a real head-turner.
The glow-up continues inside. Aiming to solidify its position, Tata is reportedly raiding the features bin. We can expect a host of upgrades aimed at making life on board a lot more pleasant, including an auto-dimming interior mirror, a premium audio system, and rear disc brakes. Perhaps most significantly, the new model may come equipped with a full Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, bringing a new level of active safety to the segment.
The Heart of the Matter
While the Nexon will be wearing a sharp new suit, under the bonnet, things are expected to remain familiar. The 2026 model is likely to carry over the existing engine lineup: the punchy 1.2L turbo-petrol engine producing 120PS and 170Nm, and the torquey 1.5L turbo-diesel good for 115PS and 260Nm. While enthusiasts might have hoped for new firepower, these are proven and capable powertrains. It is worth noting that the diesel engine is currently restricted to mid- and top-spec trims and is not available with the dual-clutch automatic (DCA) transmission, a strategy that may continue with the new generation.
