Skoda celebrates 25 years manufacturing in India

Škoda Auto has celebrated a major milestone – 25 years in the Indian automotive market, a journey that began with their first factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). The Czech carmaker was the first Volkswagen Group brand to enter India back in 2000. Since then, India has grown into one of Škoda’s most important international markets, supporting their expansion into neighboring regions like ASEAN, the Middle East, and Australia.

Škoda’s first offering in India was the original Octavia, assembled in rented facilities, which quickly paved the way for a strong foothold in the market with models like the Fabia, Rapid, and Kodiaq. Fast forward to 2018, and Škoda took on a bigger role, overseeing the Volkswagen Group’s operations in India under their “India 2.0” strategy. This included developing the tailored MQB-A0-IN platform – a game-changer for the Indian market. The platform formed the basis for popular models such as the Kushaq, the Slavia sedan, and the recently launched Kylaq SUV. With local production sitting at 95%, Škoda has truly adapted to meet the unique demands of the market.

Notably, the Kylaq compact SUV, Škoda’s entry into the highly competitive sub-4-metre segment, hit the ground running with 10,000 pre-orders in just ten days. Strategic models like these aim to help Škoda achieve its ambitious annual sales target of 100,000 units in India by 2026. Moreover, Škoda is actively expanding across the nation, increasing customer touchpoints by 35% in just the last two years.

Sustainability is also a key focus. Škoda operates two plants in India, including one entirely powered by green energy in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and another in Pune, which expanded its solar power capabilities to provide 30% of its electricity needs. By 2030, Škoda intends for all its Indian facilities to reach CO2 neutrality, aligning with their global sustainability goals. On top of that, Škoda has invested in infrastructure, education, and social initiatives, further embedding itself into Indian communities.

Looking ahead, Škoda views India as a linchpin in its international growth strategy. Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, stressed the importance of this thriving market, dubbing it their “second pillar” after Europe. With an array of locally produced models, forward-thinking sustainability measures, and impressive customer engagement, Škoda shows no signs of slowing down on its Indian adventure.
