The new LEAF will feature an intelligent route planner synchronised with Google Automotive Services, designed to make finding charging stations along a journey intuitive and stress-free. When it comes to the actual charging, European-spec models promise the ability to add up to 250km of range in a mere 14 minutes using a 150 kW DC fast charger. For U.S. customers, the LEAF will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and support Plug and Charge functionality, aiming for a 10-80% charge in an estimated 35 minutes, simplifying the charging experience considerably.
Beyond just faster charging, Nissan engineers have focused on smarter charging and battery management. Applicable grades will feature a new navigation-linked conditioning function that optimizes battery cooling based on the inputted destination . By assessing the route for potential high-load scenarios like steep hills or extended freeway driving, the system can proactively adjust battery cooling. Conversely, if a low-load journey is anticipated after fast charging, particularly in warmer months, the system can temporarily adjust the battery’s acceptable temperature to allow for increased charging capacity . Perhaps one of the most forward-thinking aspects of the new LEAF is its expanded Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) capability. As Chief Planning Specialist Keiji Endo states, “V2X… supports not only energy balance between supply and demand but also supports society to utilize renewable energy. This EV is not just a car, it is supporting customers and communities with energy needs” . The LEAF will offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) connection points, with U.S. models on applicable grades featuring in-cabin and cargo area connectors capable of a combined 1500 watts of discharge. In markets like Japan, the LEAF continues its Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) functionality, enabling the car to supply electricity back to a house or integrate with home energy management systems and solar power.
