Expanding on the article we broke earlier this month, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (“Nissan”) and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (“Honda”) have taken a significant step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore a potential business integration through the establishment of a joint holding company. This move is positioned as a strategy to enhance their competitiveness in the rapidly evolving global automotive industry, where technological innovation and shifting market dynamics demand greater adaptability .
The partnership builds upon earlier agreements between the two companies, including an MOU signed on March 15 focusing on achieving a carbon-neutral society and zero-traffic-fatality goals through collaboration in vehicle intelligence and electrification. This was followed by another MOU on August 1, which deepened their partnership and included joint research into foundational technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs), with an emphasis on intelligence and electrification .
Amid these ongoing discussions, both companies recognized the need to consolidate their management resources—such as knowledge, technology, and human capital—to enhance their ability to respond to industry changes. The establishment of a joint holding company would enable them to integrate their automotive, motorcycle, and power product businesses, creating synergies that are expected to improve their mid- to long-term corporate value while delivering more innovative and attractive products to customers worldwide .

This potential integration also highlights a shared commitment to maintaining global leadership and contributing to Japan’s industrial base. By pooling resources, Nissan and Honda aim to solidify their position as a “leading global mobility company,” ensuring they remain competitive in an industry defined by electrification, advanced software, and next-generation technology .
The outcome of this collaboration has significant implications for their ability to adapt to fast-paced industry changes and meet growing demands for sustainable and intelligent mobility solutions. While these discussions are still in the exploratory phase, the integration stands to create a foundation for both companies’ long-term success in the global market.
