This time, it’s the turn of their popular compact SUV. Say “Guten Tag” to the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 e, a vehicle promising the best of both worlds: silent, zero-emission city driving and petrol-powered freedom for the open road. But in a market filling with electric options, does it strike the right balance?
What is it?
Launching in Australia from July 17 and according to Mercedes-Benz NZ ‘this month too’, the GLA 250 e is Mercedes-Benz’s latest contender in the compact luxury SUV segment. It’s aimed squarely at the driver who wants the eco-credentials and refinement of an EV for the daily grind but isn’t quite ready to let go of the long-range security a petrol engine provides. This isn’t just about a new badge; it’s a sophisticated new powertrain designed to offer genuine electric mobility for everyday trips.
What’s under the skin?
This is where the dual personality comes to life. The GLA 250 e combines a punchy 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine (120 kW) with an electric motor, powered by an 11.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The total system output is a very respectable 160 kW and 450 Nm of torque, ensuring it has the go to match the show.
The headline figure for many will be the WLTP-tested, electric-only range of up to 65 km. This is a significant number, comfortably covering the average daily commute and meaning trips to the petrol station could become a rare occasion. When it’s time to recharge, two cables are provided as standard for home and public charging points. The standard 3.7 kW AC charging system can be boosted to a much quicker 11 kW for an additional sum, a worthy upgrade for those looking to maximise their electric driving time.

As you’d expect from the three-pointed star, the GLA 250 e doesn’t skimp on standard features. It comes generously equipped right out of the box with:

- The KEYLESS-GO Convenience Package and a wireless charging system.

How can I spec it up?
For those wanting a sportier edge or more tech, Mercedes has you covered with optional packages. The AMG Line Package ($2,500) adds a more aggressive look with sports seats, a Nappa leather multifunction steering wheel, a sports brake system, and lowered comfort suspension.
If you’re a tech fiend, you’ll want the Plus Package, which can be added on top of the AMG Line. This bundles desirable features like a Burmester Surround Sound System, a head-up display, MULTIBEAM LED lighting, and the very clever MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation.

A range of 65km? I hope that’s meant to say 650km…
It’s a hybrid, so electric-only range is upto 65km but overall, with petrol much more 🙂
