For over a century, the grille of a Mercedes-Benz has been more than just an air intake; it’s been a signature, a statement of intent, and an unmistakable badge of provenance. From the commanding vertical grilles of the 600 Pullman to the intricate horizontal designs of recent years, that front end has been the face of the brand. But in an electric future, what becomes of a car’s face when its primary function (cooling a combustion engine) is no longer needed?
Mercedes-Benz has answered that question with the all-new electric GLC, the first vehicle to showcase a dramatic evolution of the brand’s design language. Set for its world premiere at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on September 7, 2025, the electric GLC introduces a reimagined “iconic grille” (isn’t that BMW?) that transforms the brand’s most recognizable feature for a new era.
A Grille for a New Generation
This isn’t just a plate slapped on the front; it’s a bold reinterpretation that fuses heritage with high-tech artistry. The new design, a key part of the next phase of the “Sensual Purity” philosophy, features three main elements: a wide chromed frame, a smoked-glass-effect lattice structure, and integrated contour lighting. It has transitioned from a functional component into what Mercedes calls an “illuminated work of art, conveying prestige and status through reduction, clean lines and technology”.
For those who want to make an even bigger statement, an optional illuminated version is available, featuring a spectacular 942 backlit dots that can be animated, bringing the front of the GLC to life. The central star and its surrounding contour are also illuminated, ensuring there’s no mistaking this vehicle’s identity, day or night.
As Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for Mercedes-Benz Group AG, states, “Our new iconic grille is not just a new front for the GLC, it redefines the face of our brand. It is the perfect fusion of lasting design codes reinterpreted for the future, making our cars instantly recognizable”.

More Than Just a Pretty Face
It’s significant that this new design direction debuts on the GLC. For many years, the GLC has been Mercedes-Benz’s most popular and best-selling model series, making it the perfect vehicle to lead this charge. The new GLC with EQ Technology marks a turning point for the brand in the midsize segment. It will be one of the first in a new family of vehicles powered by MB.OS—the company’s next-generation, in-house developed operating system that acts as the “superbrain” for every new Mercedes-Benz.
The design revolution continues inside. The cabin is dominated by an all-new, seamless MBUX HYPERSCREEN, elevating the interior in a way never seen before in a GLC. Mercedes-Benz says the goal is to evoke a “Welcome Home” feeling—a sense of comfort, safety, and intuitive familiarity that makes every drive feel like a seamless extension of the driver’s life.
The all-new electric GLC is more than just the next iteration of a popular SUV. It’s the face of the future for Mercedes-Benz, signalling a new era where iconic design and cutting-edge electric technology merge to redefine the brand for the decades to come.
