Goodwood to Honor 40 Years Since Senna’s First Grand Prix Win

Forty years ago, the world witnessed the emergence of a racing legend. Ayrton Senna, a name synonymous with skill, determination, and an unwavering pursuit of victory, secured his first Formula 1 win at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix 1. This April, the Goodwood Members’ Meeting will host a special tribute to this momentous occasion, offering a poignant reflection on the life and career of one of the sport’s greatest drivers.

The centerpiece of the celebration will be a demonstration featuring the very car that carried Senna to that inaugural victory – the iconic Lotus 97T 1. The car, maintained in running condition by Classic Team Lotus, will be driven by Bruno Senna, Ayrton’s nephew, adding a deeply personal and emotional dimension to the event. The Lotus 97T, adorned in its striking John Player Special livery, is a powerful symbol of Senna’s breakthrough and a reminder of his unparalleled talent, particularly his mastery of wet conditions, as demonstrated at that first Grand Prix.

This will not be Bruno Senna’s first time honoring his uncle at Goodwood. In 2021, at the 78th Members’ Meeting, he drove Ayrton’s 1991 World Championship-winning McLaren MP4/6, creating a moment that resonated deeply with fans. The upcoming demonstration promises to be equally moving, allowing a new generation to witness the legacy of Ayrton Senna and providing a nostalgic experience for those who remember his brilliance firsthand.

Clive Chapman of Classic Team Lotus shared the significance of Senna’s first win, not only for the driver but for the team itself. It marked a resurgence for Team Lotus after a challenging period, and Senna himself considered the Estoril race to be his greatest. Following the Goodwood event, the Lotus 97T will be taken to Estoril, where Bruno will drive it on the exact anniversary of Ayrton’s historic victory, creating a truly fitting tribute.

The Duke of Richmond expressed his delight in hosting this celebration, emphasizing the importance of remembering Senna’s extraordinary life and career. He anticipates another unforgettable tribute, recalling Bruno’s emotional lap in the McLaren MP4/6 in 2021.

The Goodwood Members’ Meeting, known for its intimate atmosphere and access-all-areas approach, offers the perfect setting for this tribute. It’s a place where enthusiasts can connect with the history of motorsport and appreciate the human stories behind the machines. The Senna celebration is an opportunity to connect and reflect on one of the greatest in racing.
