If there’s one thing New Zealanders love more than a good pork pie, it’s giving back for a great cause—so what better way to combine both than the iconic Pork Pie Charity Run? This biennial event, running from April 4th to April 9th, 2025, promises not just a horsepower-packed nostalgia trip, but a journey that will make a tangible difference in Kiwi communities.

Borrowing inspiration from the cult Kiwi movie Goodbye Pork Pie, where a gang of misfits sped across New Zealand in a yellow Mini, this charity run turns the cinematic adventure into a reality with a purpose. A fleet of 50 MINIs—classic and modern alike—will tackle an epic 2,300km journey from Paihia in the north to Invercargill in the south, passing through stunning and varied landscapes such as steep mountain roads, pothole-ridden stretches, and urban traffic bottlenecks. But this is no ordinary road trip—it’s fueled entirely by heart.
The goal? To raise $500,000 for KidsCan, an organisation dedicated to providing essentials like food, clothing, and health items to children in need across New Zealand. With over 260 schools on its waitlist, KidsCan is fighting tirelessly to ensure 10,000 more Kiwi kids gain access to life-changing support. Pork Pie Charity Run, with donations already nearing $375,000, is on track to help 1,500 more young Kiwis stay warm, nourished, and ready to learn.

The minis themselves will take centre stage, boasting an impressive 40-60 ratio of restored classics to contemporary models. Stand-out cars like the famous “MiniMack” and fan-favorite “PPIE” will make the trek, supported by the latest MINI Cooper 3-door edition, part of MINI New Zealand’s generous sponsorship. And of course, MINI is taking the spirit of giving beyond just transportation, providing a sponsored lunch for participants on the second day. It’s all part of the brand’s philosophy of “BIG LOVE,” which emphasises positive action through joy and togetherness.
A mix of newcomers and seasoned veterans make up the 100-strong participant roster, including teams that have been involved in every Pork Pie Run since 2009, and even a few first-timers eager to join the fun. For many participants, it’s about more than just charity—it’s a celebration of their passion for these timeless cars and the sense of community they foster.

“It’s not just about the car, it’s about the people. We might be MINI nuts, but this is about the bigger picture—making a difference for the kids who need it,” said a spokesperson for the event.
So, if you’re in New Zealand this April, brace yourself for the buzzing caravan of little cars with big hearts barreling through your town, spreading joy, nostalgia, and hope. The Pork Pie Charity Run is proof that even the smallest things—whether a car, a gesture, or a slice of pork pie—can make a massive difference. After all, as MINI New Zealand’s General Manager Alex Brockhoff put it: “The Pork Pie Charity Run is the perfect embodiment of big love—bringing people together, celebrating a common passion, and driving change for a good cause”.

Team Tarmac Life will be on the Pork Pie run this year, so stay tuned to hear all about it.
