For decades, the Nissan Navara has been a fixture in New Zealand driveways, job sites, and bush tracks. Now, it’s about to become even more interesting. Nissan has just confirmed that the all-new Navara Pro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is coming to our shores in 2027, (and looking at the specs), it’s a genuinely capable workhorse that happens to have a battery.

It comes locally endorsed
Nissan’s Australian and New Zealand teams have played a central role in developing this ute, with customer needs directly influencing every spec decision. Five prototype vehicles have already clocked over 20,000 kilometres across Australian conditions, getting thoroughly tested on the kind of terrain and in the conditions that Kiwis actually subject their vehicles to. The team evaluated both a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and specifically chose the 2.0-litre for Oceania because towing, payload, and sustained performance matter here.

The Numbers That Count
So, the Oceania-specification Navara Pro PHEV pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a high-output electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering a preliminary 300kW of combined power and 800Nm of combined torque.

For those who actually use their utes, the Navara Pro PHEV offers approximately 1,000kg of payload and a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, exactly what traditional ute buyers expect. The mechanical 4×4 system and differential-lock capabilities mean you’re getting a genuine off-roader, not just a plug-in hybrid with a tray on the back.

Drive Modes for Every Scenario
Whether you’re commuting to the city or heading into the backcountry, the vehicle offers four selectable drive modes (ECO, Standard, Sport & Slippery) and seven terrain modes (Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading & Expert). Each mode adjusts the powertrain, steering, and traction-control mapping to optimize performance across different driving conditions. There’s also available Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which means you can tap into electrical power on the go, handy for work, camping, or weekend adventures.

Design That Tells a Story
The styling isn’t just for show either. The Navara Pro PHEV pays homage to the legendary 1980s D21 Hardbody pickup through a trio of horizontal LED elements positioned above the grille, reinterpreting the original three-slot hood opening for a modern, electrified era. It’s heritage with a contemporary edge.
Premium Where It Counts
The all-new Navara Pro PHEV has been built from the outset for buyers who expect a premium experience, whether they’re on the highway or on a bush track. The five-seat dual-cab configuration comes with refined materials, extensive soundproofing, and available features like a large central touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Peace of Mind for the Long Haul
The Navara Pro PHEV will be backed by Nissan’s 10-Year, 300,000km extended warranty (whichever occurs first, when servicing with Nissan), plus Nissan’s dealer network across New Zealand. For those of us who venture beyond the metropolitan bubble, that support matters.
What We Still Don’t Know
Nissan hasn’t released all the details yet. The battery capacity, EV-only driving range, final suspension configuration, and pricing will be confirmed closer to launch next year. Meaning that the specifications mentioned are preliminary and subject to final homologation, so there may be tweaks along the way.

Tarmac Takeaway
Australia and New Zealand are set to become the FIRST right-hand-drive markets globally to offer this electrified ute, and that’s a big deal. What this means is this is a genuine Navara that happens to have a plug-in hybrid powertrain, engineered specifically for how Kiwis actually use their utes.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence about electrification because you genuinely need a capable workhorse, the Navara Pro PHEV might finally be the answer you’ve been waiting for (although you still have to wait a bit). Stay tuned for more details as we head toward 2027.
