Triumph has a busy 2027 planned, with four new models coming across the Tiger 1200, Tiger 900 and Street Triple ranges. Today, we learn about another model that was confirmed, an all-new Bonneville, the T40.

The new Bonneville T40 will get its own dedicated engine and chassis, not reused hardware wearing a new badge. That engine is a reworked version of Triumph’s 400cc TR Series single, the same family that powers the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X/XC, Tracker 400 and Thruxton 400, but with its own cylinder head and a tune built specifically for Bonneville character: strong low-end torque instead of a rev-chasing delivery, with 36 Nm at 5,000 rpm and 32 PS at 7,000 rpm. In its home country, it is A2-licence compliant, putting that torque-rich feel within reach of newer riders as well as experienced ones stepping down in capacity, so here’s hoping for a LAMS entitlement.

The dedicated chassis shows up most clearly in how the T40 wears its Bonneville styling: a teardrop fuel tank, round LED headlight, twin rear shocks, spoked 18-inch front/17-inch rear wheels and a peashooter silencer, finished with hand painted coach lining and brushed aluminium engine covers. The T40 Black takes the same bones into a darker, meaner treatment, with matte grey and black paint, gloss-black wheels with contrasting bright spokes, and powdercoated engine covers. Yes, please.

Technology is where the T40 pushes hardest for its class: a 4-inch circular TFT display, even with an analogue style for the Heritage Mode for the traditionalists out there, full smartphone connectivity and built-in navigation, five riding modes, cruise control, and lean-sensitive cornering ABS and traction control. These are features Triumph itself describes as normally reserved for larger-capacity motorcycles, here fitted to a learner-legal 400. A 790mm seat height (770mm with the accessory low seat) and a 191kg kerb weight round out a bike aimed at widening who can ride a Bonneville, not just who can afford one.

Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer, says the brief was never “a smaller Bonneville,” but a motorcycle that earns the name on style, character and ownership experience, all things that tie the Bonneville nameplate is to the brand’s history. Pricing for the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black will be announced in early 2027, with bikes reaching dealers from spring 2027.
