A quiet corner of Central Otago is about to host what could be the most metal-clanging, diesel-fuming, heritage-packed weekend New Zealand has ever seen. The small town of Cromwell is gearing up for Central Otago Tracks & Wheels, and they’re coming for Ireland’s world record.
Currently, County Kildare holds the crown with 285 Massey Ferguson tractors in one place. But here’s where it gets interesting: organisers have allocated 500 spaces and they’re dead serious about claiming that trophy. As Peter MacDougall, the Massey Muster Coordinator, puts it with refreshing bluntness: “We only need 286 Masseys to take the record off the Irish. There are more than that sitting in sheds within an hour of Cromwell. Wash the bird muck off it, get it here, and be part of it.”
Easter 2027 – Cromwell’s Moment to Shine
Mark your calendars: 26–28 March 2027. This isn’t your grandfather’s quiet machinery gathering. Organisers are releasing 10,000 tickets per day, which could make this the biggest event Cromwell has ever hosted. What are you actually getting for your entry? Over 1,000 vintage tractors, trucks, earthmovers, steam engines, and yes, actual aircraft. The programme lineup reads like a petrolhead’s fever dream: earthmoving machines in action, a bonkers 120-metre tractor pull, Clydesdales, machine parades, steam and stationary engines, a local vendor market, and a kids zone. Aircraft will fly in to the airfield next door and park along the fence line as a static display.
The Money Angle – Because Community Actually Matters
The arena being built at Cromwell Racecourse is permanent, and it didn’t cost the organisers a dime in construction. Local contractors and sponsors donated $350,000 in earthworks and materials. When the show packs up, Cromwell gets a brand-new rugby paddock handed back to the community. Odette Hopgood, the event lead, nails the philosophy, “This is a community event. The arena gets built by local firms for nothing, and when the show packs up, Cromwell gets a new rugby field.”
