The Lexus ES has always been about quiet refinement rather than drama, and the fully redesigned 2026 model stays true to that brief. What’s new this time, however, is a level of powertrain flexibility the ES has never offered before, including, for the first time, a fully electric option.
A Platform Built for More Than One Future
The 2026 ES rides on a revised TNGA-K platform that Lexus describes as “multi-pathway,” meaning it can accommodate both hybrid electric and battery electric powertrains within the same basic architecture. That’s a first for the ES nameplate and a meaningful shift in how Lexus is engineering its core models.
The platform also gains increased rigidity at the front, floor, and rear. Lexus says this reinforcement reduces body vibrations and sharpens steering response, practical benefits that should translate directly into a more composed driving experience.
Hybrid and Electric Powertrain Options
The hybrid line-up gains a notable addition: the ES 350h now offers all-wheel drive for the first time. Lexus achieves this through a sixth-generation 2.5-litre hybrid system with an additional electric motor driving the rear axle via a compact eAxle unit that combines the power control unit and transaxle.
The fully electric models are entirely new to the ES range. Two variants are offered: the ES 350e in front-wheel drive and the ES 500e in all-wheel drive. Both support NACS charging ports, DC fast charging, and Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging via an 11-kW on-board charger. Under ideal conditions, a 10-to-80-percent charge takes approximately 30 minutes via DC fast charging, though Lexus notes that real-world times will vary.
A Noticeably Bigger Cabin
The 2026 ES is 6.5 inches longer overall, with a wheelbase stretched by 3.1 inches. That extra length feeds directly into rear passenger space, which has been a traditional weakness of the outgoing model relative to some rivals.
Lexus has also slimmed down the front seatbacks and lowered the window frames to increase glass area, creating what it calls a “Clean Tech x Elegance” interior philosophy, an open upper section contrasted by a more enveloping lower cabin. An Executive Package, available on the ES 350e FWD Luxury trim, adds further rear-seat comfort features.
Updated Technology Throughout
The 2026 ES introduces the latest Lexus Interface multimedia system, centred on a 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus simultaneous dual Bluetooth connectivity. A 12.3-inch driver display gains a new home button and split-screen capability.
Navigation is now integrated directly into the digital gauge cluster, and the native voice assistant has been updated for faster response times. These are incremental improvements rather than a wholesale reinvention, but they address areas where earlier Lexus infotainment systems drew criticism.
Taken together, the 2026 ES represents a genuine generational step. The multi-pathway platform gives Lexus room to move as buyer demand shifts between hybrid and electric, without committing the entire model line to a single technology. For a car that has long sold on dependability and comfort, that kind of quiet flexibility may prove to be its most important new feature.
