BAIC Accelerates into New Zealand with X55 and B30

New Zealand’s SUV market is about to welcome a bold new contender as BAIC, one of China’s longest-standing automotive manufacturers, officially launches its first models on Kiwi soil. Backed by more than 68 years of engineering expertise and a footprint spanning over 90 global markets, BAIC’s arrival marks a significant expansion for the brand, and an intriguing new choice for local buyers seeking value-packed, adventure-ready motoring.

Partnering with Armstrong’s for local distribution, BAIC enters the New Zealand market with two new SUVs: the X55 mid-size SUV and the B30 medium SUV, the latter offered in three variants, Elite Adventure, Premium Adventure HEV, and Premium Adventure HEV AWD. Test drives and orders begin from February 27, signaling a confident and immediate push into the competitive Kiwi SUV segment.

A Brand Built for Real-World Adventure

According to Simon Rutherford, CEO of Auto Distribution Holdings Limited, BAIC is a brand shaped by decades of development and a global reputation for building family-oriented vehicles that combine practicality, capability, and durability. Rutherford emphasises that both the X55 and B30 naturally align with New Zealand’s lifestyle, delivering the sought-after balance of space, performance, and utility at an accessible price point.

BAIC’s pedigree in right-hand-drive markets (including South Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia) provides a proven foundation as the brand enters New Zealand. Rutherford notes that Kiwis will be drawn not only to the models’ performance and visual appeal but also to their rugged flexibility suited to the outdoors-focused culture.

Crucially, both models come supported by a seven-year warranty, a major confidence booster for new customers exploring a relatively new automotive brand in New Zealand. Combined with the brand’s long-standing engineering history, this warranty adds peace of mind and value for Kiwi buyers.

BAIC X55: Urban Style Meets Intelligent Performance

Described as “bold design meeting intelligent performance,” the X55 targets modern urban families seeking practicality without sacrificing style. Its athletic proportions, striking lighting signature, and strong road presence give it an unapologetically contemporary look, while the interior focuses on spaciousness, luxury touches, and high-tech convenience.

Under the bonnet, the X55 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 138kW and 305Nm—figures that place it comfortably among the more powerful offerings in the mid-size SUV category. Inside, drivers are treated to a 10.1-inch central control screen paired with a 10.25-inch LCD instrument display. Wireless phone connectivity and a full black interior round out the tech-rich, modern package.

Exterior options include six paint colours, with available two-tone combinations, and the SUV comes standard with LED headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights, enhancing both visibility and aesthetics.

BAIC B30: Rugged, Spacious, and Adventure-Focused

If the X55 is the stylish urbanite, the B30 is the rugged explorer. Designed with off-road capability at its core, the B30 features a tough exterior look complemented by a spacious, comfort-oriented cabin and intuitive technology for everyday usability. It aims to balance durability with refinement—making it an appealing option for families who enjoy getting off the beaten track.

The B30 shares the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine as the X55, but customers can also opt for the Hybrid EV powertrain, available in both 2WD and AWD configurations. This hybrid setup dramatically boosts output to an impressive 301kW and 685Nm of torque, positioning the B30 HEV variants among the most powerful hybrid SUVs in their class.

For off-road confidence, the B30 is equipped with four drive modes, Hill Descent Control, Hill Hold Control, and a generous 215mm of ground clearance—making it ideal for light off-roading, camping, and outdoor adventures. Additional features include fold-flat rear seats, nearly 1500 litres of boot space, heated and ventilated front seats, and a large 14.6-inch centre screen paired with a 10.25-inch instrument display.

Safety and Value at the Forefront

Both models come loaded with modern safety technology. Standard features across the lineup include six airbags and an extensive suite of ADAS systems such as Blind Spot Detection, Intelligent Cruise Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Forward Collision Warning. The X55 adds Lane Departure Warning, while the B30 features Lane Keep Assist. These systems contribute to the vehicles’ five-star VSRR safety score, reinforcing BAIC’s commitment to passenger protection.
