Here, engineers don’t just simulate a chilly morning; they create full-blown Arctic conditions. We’re talking temperatures plunging to a bone-chilling -40 degrees Celsius, accompanied by blizzards where snowflakes are blasted at the car at speeds up to 200 km/h, thanks to cutting-edge snow cannons and a high-powered fan. This intense testing ensures that crucial systems, like the windscreen wipers and air intakes, function flawlessly even when battling spray from passing trucks in a snowstorm.
But the torture test doesn’t end there. To prove its global mettle, the GLB is also subjected to scorching simulations. In the heat chamber, temperatures soar to +60 degrees Celsius while 32 powerful lamps mimic the intense solar radiation of places like Death Valley. A special “Hot Road” surface can be heated to +70 degrees Celsius, replicating the thermal punishment of a road on a blistering summer day. This obsessive level of testing guarantees that whether your destination is a ski resort or a sun-drenched coast, the GLB delivers unwavering quality and comfort.
A New Era of Climate Comfort
One of the standout innovations in the all-new GLB is its revolutionary climate system, designed for maximum comfort and efficiency. Central to this is a new multi-source heat pump, a technology adapted from the futuristic VISION EQXX programme. This clever system can draw “free” heat from three sources at once: the ambient air, and waste heat from both the electric drive and the battery. The result is astonishing efficiency. The heat pump requires only about a third of the electrical energy a conventional heater would need, which has a significant positive effect on the electric GLB’s range.
