When Polestar first unveiled its flagship SUV, the Polestar 3, it was already a statement piece, a stunning example of minimalist Scandinavian design packed with forward-thinking tech. But the Swedish electric performance brand is clearly not one for resting on its laurels. For the 2026 model year, the Polestar 3 is receiving an update so comprehensive that Polestar’s CEO, Michael Lohscheller, says, “it’s like an entirely new car”.
Forget a simple nip and tuck. This is a fundamental hardware overhaul targeting the very heart of the electric vehicle experience: the electrical architecture, the powertrain, and the central computing brain. The result? A Polestar 3 that’s not just better, but monumentally so.

The 800-Volt Revolution
The headline act for the 2026 Polestar 3 is the seismic shift to an 800-volt electrical architecture. While this might sound like dry engineering speak, its real-world implications are a game-changer for owners. This upgrade catapults the Polestar 3 into the top tier of EV charging capability, enabling a staggering peak DC charging rate of up to 350 kW.
What does that mean for you at the charging station? It means the often-tedious 10-80% battery top-up can be slashed to as little as 22 minutes—over 25% faster than the original model. That’s barely enough time to grab a flat white and a pastry before you’re ready to hit the road again. This enhancement dramatically improves the Polestar 3’s long-distance touring credentials, turning cross-country treks from a logistical puzzle into a seamless pleasure.
This new architecture isn’t just about brute charging force; it’s also about finesse. It brings an efficiency improvement of up to 6% on the WLTP cycle and allows for the integration of new, advanced lithium-ion batteries from supplier CATL. This holistic approach ensures that every electron is put to good use, further extending the vehicle’s already capable range.

More Grunt and a Rear-Biased Soul
Polestar has always put the “performance” in electric performance, and the 2026 model year doubles down on this promise. All versions of the Polestar 3 now benefit from a potent new in-house developed permanent magnet synchronous rear motor. When paired with the asynchronous front motor, this new configuration delivers a truly monumental surge of power, with the top-tier Performance variant now boasting up to 670 bhp (500 kW).
But power is nothing without control and efficiency. Borrowing a clever trick from its Polestar 2 sibling, the front motor now features an automatic disconnect function. When you’re just cruising, the front motor can decouple itself from the drivetrain, reducing parasitic drag and improving efficiency for everyday driving.
For the enthusiast, perhaps the most exciting change is the shift in character. The new, more powerful rear motor means the power balance is now more distinctly rear-biased than before. Combined with updated anti-roll bars and extensive software refinement for the steering, Polestar promises “an even more direct and engaging driving experience across all model variants”. This points to a car that will be not just quick in a straight line, but a genuine joy to pilot through a winding back road.

A Quantum Leap in Intelligence
The Polestar 3 was already a “software-defined vehicle,” but its brain has just received a super-soldier serum. The previous core computer has been replaced by the cutting-edge NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin processor. This move represents a quantum leap in computing power, jumping from 30 to a mind-boggling 254 Trillion Operations Per Second (TOPS).
This more than eight-fold increase in processing power allows for faster, more intelligent management of everything from the advanced active safety systems and sensor data to the intricate performance of the battery itself. It’s the digital backbone that makes all the other hardware upgrades sing in perfect harmony.
In an almost unprecedented move that demonstrates a serious commitment to its customers, Polestar will also offer this new computer as a complimentary retrofit to all existing Polestar 3 owners. This means even the earliest adopters won’t be left behind by the march of technology—a truly class-leading gesture.

Refined Style, Smarter Choices
To round out the updates, Polestar has refined the design and packaging. A new trim structure—Rear motor, Dual motor, and Performance—makes the lineup clearer. In a neat stylistic touch, the trim levels are even expressed through the seatbelt design: solid black for the Rear motor, black with a Swedish gold stripe for the Dual motor, and full Swedish gold for the range-topping Performance model.

A new dark grey metallic colour, ‘Storm,’ replaces the outgoing ‘Thunder,’ and the standard interior upholstery is upgraded to a premium Bio-attributed MicroTech in Charcoal with repurposed aluminium deco, which was previously an optional extra. These subtle but meaningful changes ensure the Polestar 3’s aesthetics remain as sharp and sophisticated as its new technology.
