All-New MG HS HYBRID+ and SUPER HYBRID Land in NZ

MG is continuing its relentless assault on the New Zealand market, and this time it’s aimed squarely at the heart of the family SUV segment. The brand has officially completed its HS line-up with the launch of two new electrified models: the HS HYBRID+ and the HS SUPER HYBRID, promising efficiency, power, and flexibility for Kiwi roads. It’s a strategic move that provides a clear “good, better, best” pathway for buyers looking to dip their toes or dive headfirst into the world of electrification.

Dean Sheed, Country Business Manager for MG New Zealand, calls the now-complete range “a great option for families looking for an efficient and powerful mid-sized SUV without compromise.”

The Sensible Step-Up: MG HS HYBRID+

Think of the HS HYBRID+ as the perfect entry point into electrified motoring without the need for plugging in. This self-charging hybrid is designed for those who want to significantly reduce their fuel bills without changing their driving habits. It pairs a 1.5L turbo engine with a potent 146kW electric motor and a 1.83kWh battery, delivering a combined output of 165kW and 340Nm of torque. That’s a healthy amount of shove for a mid-sized SUV, ensuring it won’t feel sluggish on highway overtakes or during the school run.

The headline figure for many will be the combined fuel consumption of just 5.2L/100km.In an era of volatile fuel prices, that’s a number that will make a tangible difference to the weekly budget.MG has also included a feature called “Dynamic regeneration,” which allows the driver to choose between ‘Low’ or ‘High’ settings for energy recuperation, letting you tailor the driving experience and maximise efficiency. Beyond the powertrain, the new HS has grown, boasting a wider 1890mm body and an extended 4670mm length, translating to more space for passengers. For weekend adventures, it offers a cavernous 1484L of boot capacity with the rear seats folded down, making it a seriously practical option. Pricing starts at a very competitive $44,990 for the Excite model, rising to $48,990 for the Essence.

The Range Anxiety Killer: MG HS SUPER HYBRID

If the HYBRID+ is a sensible step, the SUPER HYBRID is a confident leap. This Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variant is, as Stuart Mitchell, Business Director for EV & Hybrid, puts it, “designed for Kiwi motorists.” Its standout feature is a hugely impressive pure electric driving range of up to 120km (WLTP).This figure comfortably surpasses many other PHEVs currently on the market, which often sit in the 60-80km range. For many Kiwis, this means the daily commute, school drop-offs, and grocery runs can be completed entirely on silent, emissions-free electric power.

When you do need to go further, the SUPER HYBRID eliminates range anxiety completely. When fully charged and fuelled, it boasts a total combined range of over 1,000km.”Drivers can fuel up, charge the battery and drive over 1,000kms, giving them the freedom to go anywhere they want,” says Mitchell. This is achieved with an almost unbelievable official combined fuel consumption figure of 0.7L/100km, a number that relies on maximising the use of that large battery. Power gets a significant bump too, with a combined output of 220kW and 350Nm, making it the most powerful HS in the range. Inside, the SUPER HYBRID features a premium cabin with soft-touch materials and smart tech, including dual 12.3” displays, wireless Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and a wireless charging pad to keep you seamlessly connected. The SUPER HYBRID Excite is priced at $52,990, with the top-spec Essence at $56,990.

The MG Peace of Mind Promise

Backing up these impressive specs is MG’s compelling ownership proposition. Both the HS HYBRID+ and SUPER HYBRID come with up to 10 years or 250,000km of warranty coverage when servicing is kept within the MG network. This consists of a standard seven-year/unlimited KM warranty plus a three-year service-activated extension, along with roadside assistance for the duration. It’s a powerful statement of confidence in their product.

The all-new HS HYBRID+ is rolling into dealerships now, with the highly anticipated HS SUPER HYBRID set to arrive in early October. With two distinct and highly capable electrified options, MG has thrown down the gauntlet, offering Kiwi families a powerful blend of efficiency, practicality, and value that will be very hard to ignore.
